Rockwell 6c - harsh shave today

I've been using fairly mild razors and just picked up the 6c. Had my first shave and it was the most irritating shave I've ever had. I used the #3 plate and the rockwell blade that came with it. I will try other plates and different blades, but just wondering which might be the culprit - the plate# or the blade?

Well if memory serve me correctly you got 6 options out of three plates.

I would have start at mildest working up.

New razor is like new Pool Cue, got to get hang of it. Time n practice.

Likely the blade. The Rockwell branded blades aren't great, but the 6C on plate 3 should be very smooth (with the right blade).

I was guessing that this was the most likely the cause. I would not have expected a plate on the mild side to be the reason.

I can get harsh shaves from plate 3 and up. If the blade is a bit dull, I may end up using too much pressure…. It’s a fairly top heavy razor.

Honestly, I don’t *need* to use anything over the 2 plate, so I mainly use plate 2 and a sharp blade. Astra SP is about as dull as I like to go in that razor with the larger gaps. Recently, GSB or Personna, and it’s even better On the lower numbered plate.

Dull yet interesting
As others have said, change blades. I used a Rockwell blade once.
Once.
Never again.
I recommend Astra SP's, Gillette Perma-Sharps or Gillette Nacets, among several others.

Update:

I used an Astra SP with the same #3 plate and the difference was astounding. This time, the shave was great, no irritation - smooth as butter. Why on earth, would they ship a nice razor with this low-end blade? The Rockwell blades now have a great view of the bottom of my trash can.

the rockwell blades are the worst I've ever tried, after one pass, I had to throw it away, so scratchy and itchy, never again! I currently use Bolzanos and Green astras!

Glad you found a blade that works. The Rockwell 6s with a good blade is a great shaver. I use it regularly on R5 and it gives me efficient and very comfortable shaves.

Don’t be scared using higher plates, it’s all in the mind. I used to shave with lower plates only in my 6S.

As I get used to it applying light pressure, I am now shaving with R6 comfortably without any irritation.

Good call.
Your experience mirrored mine. A simply terrible blade from my experience.
Once I switched to better blades like that Astra SP, Nacet, Perma-Sharp and others, it was clear sailing to good shaves.
