For a second I wondered how you close the blade - obviously the pins don't go all the way through.
That's interesting alright.

I've never seen scales lined like that - can't imagine what it could be.
Maybe - the fabric had crox on it and you opened and closed the razor to sharpen it?

Just kidding - it's late and I'm tired - the absurd seems normal right now.

it sure seems absurd to put that where it could hold water. my first thought was maybe oil to keep the blade oiled. who knows i surely do not.

Wouldn't the felt absorb water and make things worse maybe? Very interesting.

Don't know. I had this one I restored that had a piece of cardboard glued to the inside. At the time I took the razor apart I did not think much of it.

After cleaning up the blade and scales it became apparent why it was there

The piece was there to hold the blade up and keep it from coming out the bottom.

Not sure if this is the case with yours you have a third pin but anything is possible.

as i said in the O P , this seems to be a original factory installation. but it is a first for me. i hope someone knows more about it than i do. just strange. the pins holding the felt in are short large headed pins. i am finding this more interesting than i thought when i purchased it for certain.

I was guessing the felt had oil impregnated in it and it was shoved in for storage (either long term post use, or from the factory until first use). Odd that it would have been pinned in though...

i removed the pins and the felt. the felt was glued and pinned in. IMO a definite factory installation. i am puzzled by this razor for sure. during removal of the pins and felt i noticed the wedge was 'wedged' in 2 ways. tick a the top and thin at the bottom & thick toward the blade and thin away from the blade. both ways it is 'wedged' quite a bit. my first that i have noticed. this is an unusual blade IMO. when i purchased this blade i was unaware of any of this including not noticing it was a 4 pin razor.
