What's new

1/4 Le Grelot...Man am I disapppointed!!

My wife asked me for some ideas for my birthday this year. So like any good husband I graciously obliged. At the top of the list was a new 1/4 grind Le Grelot in satin finish and white scales from Martin. I've been looking forward to this razor ever since I put the list together. The rave reviews made me even more excited!

Today I got an email from my wife saying that Martin sold out! I feel silly saying this, but I'm actually sick to my stomach! I cannot fully express my disappointment.

There's some still available with bone scales, but the price increase is pretty significant. Plus I think it's a mirror finish and I was looking for the satin since it's a little different.

I'm planning to post a WTB on BST so if you're in the market to sell, please let me know!

Guys, the lesson learned is: if you want it and can afford it, buy it!

damn Gogo I feel sorry for you. I was playing around with a 1/4 Le Grelot too,
but just saw they were sold out.
I wasn´t looking forward to them that much so I´m fine.
But I can totally understand what you are going through right now.

To cheer you up, there are many users with one of those here,
so chances are good you can purchase one from a member

I wish you good luck dude!

And tell your wife how lucky you feel she would have made you this kind of a gift.
Mine just gave me a Naniwa 1.000, I love it when our girls are so sweet :001_smile

I mistakenly thought you were disappointed with the shave and thought to myself "Matt is the first one...etc".

But, now I understand. Bummer. Might be a few at other vendors. Worth a search.

It seemed to take forever to tweek mine (B&B LE) to the point I desired, but once there, it was worth the effort.

Scene: Doc4 sitting at his computer ... reads thread title ...

"What the ... ? What a stupid idiot! How could he not like that Grelot??"

(Doc4 moves the mouse in his right hand ... *click* ... reads the first post ...)

"Aaaahh! NOW that makes sense. Poor sod."

Martin was sold out once before, and then it was the last supply ever of those Grelots &c &c.

But a new supply was found, so a few more came on the market. I mention this not to suggest that Martin was trying to fabricate a shortage or anything ... I have nothing but respect for the way he does business. But I'd suggest keeping an eye on his website just in case the other dusty, cobweb-encrusted case in the TI basement turns out to be full of Grelots as well.

+1 on both counts.
My B&B took ages to get dialed in, but I am now on a comfortable shave 10 with nothing more than stropping

I purposely made the headline that way for exactly this kind of reaction!
I guess I was trying to make fun of the whole situation.

Thanks for the comforting thoughts guys.

If it makes you feel better, I had the same disappointment earlier this year when Martin told me he was sold out of the Le Grelots. However, a month or so later, he had new ones in stock! Just wait around, he'll probably get some more in eventually.

My understanding is that the LeGrelots are made from old blanks made before LeGrelot went out of business and acquired by TI. At a certain point, there won't be any left. If anyone is going to recommend that someone "just wait around," it should be Martin, who would be in a position to know. Don't you think?

I was about to ask, "Are you sure that it's shave ready?" It doesn't help you any but I'm relieved to know that the razor's reputation is intact. :tongue_sm

FWIIW, I think I like the matte finish more than the mirror (it shows every flaw). So I'd encourage you not to dismiss the bone scaled version too readily.

I think it was me who got the last of the plastic scales (or I was very near), and my advice would be to make the effort and get the pricier version with the bone scales, as you can have an even greater regret if you don't....(of course is not my money, and I know how difficult is to get).

Or good luck finding one!

Got the call from Thiers Issard this morning. They're all gone. No more left.

So anyone who has a Le Canadien marked Le Grelot 1/4 ground you would want to know this... You have a very rare item. There were less than 6 made with my Le Canadien mark, and I have one of those few as my daily shaver.

Quite right, AFAIK. And we may well have reached that point. One can always hope for a still-undiscovered box of blanks in the back recesses of the TI warehouse, so checking Martin's website every now and again would be a decent idea.

Bone scales and mirror finish.

Both highly desirable. Bone lasts a long long time. Mirror has the practical advantage over mat finish that
1. The soap washes off more easily.
2. It gluides accross the face more smoothly.
3. Water runs off it more easily making it less prone to rust.
4. It dries more easily.

I'd pay the extra, it's a better quality razor all round. Today, only Thiers Issard seem to be able to put a good quality mirror finish on a blade. Dovo can't, you can see the grind lines even on their mirror finish. Really poor quality if you ask me.

Now if you don't have the money, maybe you have been done a favour. You can save up and buy a mirror polished razor in the future.

That's nice to know. I'll take extra special care of this one then. It's an excellent razor!

Hm, I did not know that. I apologize if my earlier post sounded flippant, I was just stating the same thing happened to me when I was told that the razors were sold out. Well, a similar thing.

So it's official! Well, then I'm glad I've got a 1/4 Le Grelot in black scales to keep me warm in the cold winter months
