What's new

Cheap Splashes are for Real Men

I'm pretty new to wet shaving, and just bought a double edged razor after going 30 years with the cartridge stuff. Anyway, I've been looking at all the cool stuff on the forum and found a bunch of Clubman fans. Gotta love a brand name like Clubman. The posts all talked about the old barbershop scent smell, how it reminded them of their youth and locker rooms and even the dudes that handle the restroom details in the old casinos (the attendants are pretty much gone, now, but occasionally you'll see them).
So, down to CVS for my first bottle of Clubman Classic. Wow! Love the stuff. After a good shave with a Merkur with some TOBS (so far, Mr. Taylor is my fav, along with Eton) and a splash or two of Clubman...I'm feeling solid and alive. Love seeing all the posts here of the 'classic' scents. And along with the high-end razors, blades, creams and brushes, there's something retro yet full circle about going back to the basic after shave lotions. Maybe, as she said in the James Bond movie, 'Sometimes the old ways are the best.'

Welcome, brother!

This thread is killing me. In the last 3 days I've purchased Nivea Energy, Gillette Cool Wave, and Adidas Dynamic Pulse. The good news is all three cost less than $20. They've now been added to Clubman, Neutrogena balm, and Nivea Original.

I couldn't pass up a bottle of Afta for $2.12. The fresh flavor smells awesome.

This has been my one and only balm. The performance is great, but more importantly my wife brought it home many years ago because she liked the way it smelled. Two satisfied customers in my home :)

Here are some of the places in Dallas that I have had good finds at. I was mostly interested in the Pinaud line. And most are beauty supply stores because, for the life of me, I cannot seem to find an actual barber supply place. I'm fairly new here and hope this list in no way violates any forum rules. I am in no way affiliated with any of these places. Just put in a little foot work is all. I have found no source for DE blades to speak of yet. I found most of these looking for pomades. Also most of these places have various sizes of Clubman Classic, I just did not include that as it is so common.

Lemmon Beauty Supply on Lemmon Ave has Special Reserve, Musk, and VIBR 12oz
K&S Beauty Supply on Forest Ln has Lilac Vegetal 6oz, Vanilla
Dougherty's Pharmacy on Royal Ln has the most stuff available. In addition to some Geo Trumpers and some ladies badger brushes, they also have VIBR 6oz, Lilac Vegetal 6oz, Eau de Quinine hair tonic, Eau de Portugal hai tonic, and Williams shave soap
Queen's Beauty Supply on Skillman St has Clubman hair tonic, Lilac Vegetal 12oz, and Clubman Nick Safe styptic powder
ET Beauty Supply on Fair Oaks Ave has Eau de Portugal hair tonic
Gold 7 Beauty Supply on Forest Ln has Clubman Nick Relief styptic powder
American Hair & Beauty Supply on Killman St has Special Reserve, Musk, VIBR 12oz, Clubman hair tonic
Preston Road Pharmacy on (you guessed it!) Preston Rd has Williams shave soap and Clubman travel size styptic pencil

Thanks for this post. I definitely got to pick up some Pinaud tomorrow after work.

You would love Lucky Tiger Aspen. I call it spicy Barbicide berries.

I've actually used it before. Bought a bottle probably about 5 years ago. I didn't remember being very enthusiastic about the scent/performance and ended up selling it off. If I remember correctly, it goes on with somewhat of a skunky essence before settling down to more of a barbershop scent. Maybe I need to try it again though.

The one that I thought was even more "Barbicide" then AV Ice Blue is Booster Polar Ice. I LOVE this one. In fact, it has the same exact ingredients as AV Ice Blue. After I slapped some on I felt cool, crisp and clean, bordering on sterile. Reset back to zero to start the day. I actually wondered, do they clean their scissors with this in Canada? I would have bought some more if AV Ice Blue weren't so easy to get.

All this talk makes me think I need to quit beating around the bush...maybe I'll just cut to the chase and pick up some Barbicide from Sally's for my morning shave. :001_huh::blink::thumbup1: Now that'll be starting the day "barbershop clean"!

Finally actually used the Ivy Club (Vi-jon) "Spice" today after owning it for almost 2 years. I wasn't sure of the scent and I guess stuck it aside, since I liked P&G Old Spice so much.

Really enjoying it! Its very spicy and masculine. I paid $1.75 when I got it, I think its $2 now, and well worth it. It has the same awesome skin feel as Old Spice, but a bit heftier spice scent, without the powder/floral notes P&G OS has.

I'm going to try the 50/50 mix of both and see if I like that. Can't hurt to try! This CHEAP AS is going to be kept around from now on, I like it!

9 pages deep and no love for the Booster line? June Clover, Polar Ice and Oriental Spice - all great!

Hey, brother. I never even heard of that stuff until you just mentioned it. How do you like it?

I got my first bottle of Booster's Polar Ice about a month ago, and I really like it. Nice barbershoppy scent, contains glycerin--a great cheap splash. Has menthol, but it's undetectable and I'm a menthol weenie. Nice and refreshing.

Was off today, I cleaned out the garage. So I decided to reward myself and since I had to run out to get gas, I'd go trolling for cheap AS.

I've been using regular Clubman for over two years, I thought to give my skin & nose a change. I checked Walgreens online for Florida Water (Thanks to whoever posted that tip!) and found a store 3 miles from the house with it in stock, the one closest to me did not show as having it. Went there and found at least 5 bottles, of course, I brought one home. Then I went to the Dollar General and found the last bottle of Barbasol Brisk.

Tomorrows shave ends with Florida Water and Friday's will end with the Brisk.

Total cost (Without tax) $3.99 for the Florida Water and $1.75 for the Brisk, not bad for a change of pace.

Thanks to all for the suggestions, I didn't want to spend a lot and find out it doesn't work for me.

Had to go to two Family Dollar stores to pick up a bottle of their Spice AS...sure hope it's not being discontinued now that you guys turned me on to it!

Used the Florida water today, felt a little warmth from the alcohol and it had a nice scent.

I would say it has a nice overall citrus scent with a small amount of floral in the background. I'm not one you can describe scents that well.

Only thing is that it didn't last too long, I guess you might need an AS to do that sometime, so you can take it as a positive or a negative.

I have to try it again soon, tomorrow I'll be trying the Barbasol Brisk.

Tomorrow
