Been watching some you tube lately, Curious to know what you all think of the the you tube pipe smoking channels?
I hear a lot about tobaccs and pipes but not sure about the time it takes me to watch them. Is it worth it?

It's only worth it if they are talking about other things. 5-7 minute review about a tobacco is painfully boring. But maybe saying something about the tobacco and going off on a tangent about sports/govt/crime/etc can be pretty entertaining.

Definately watch; some are great. Others...not so much.

To each his own, but I have watched as many pipe smoking videos as I have shaving videos, zero. Some things you just have to get a feel for, watching someone else do it doesn't translate to understanding how to do it IMO. Besides, it sounds about as exciting as watching paint dry.

Much of this hobby is about your personal experience. Tobacco needs to be experienced by you, it's not very valuable to watch someone else talk about their experience.

The how to videos have been valuable to me as a newbie, but I agree most of the other videos are likely to be quite boring.

However, even the how to videos should not be used as a model for your pipe experience: I noticed in many videos that the pipe smoker would take two short puffs off the pipe, one after another. My usual is to take one longer puff.

When I tried to duplicate the double puff technique, I only succeeded in making my pipe burn very hot, and getting tongue bite in the process. It's probably due to my puffs being longer or more forceful.

So learn what works for you, which may be entirely different than what works for someone else.

Some of the reviewers are entertaining in their own right, so when you find those ones, it's worth watching for a few minutes.

Youtube vids are very much about the presenter- some are quite smart and entertaining. In my opinion, rarely are the best videos just about watching someone smoke. I am not watching someone smoke; I am watching someone tell a story, review a tobacco or show off a new buy. Moreover, some presenters can teach you a lot. I was trying to decide on some tobaccos and I found YT reviews really helpful when I was narrowing down my choices. There are many many people making videos, and there are only a handful that are "must watch". I wouldn't dismiss them though, there is great info to be found.

I've been following a father and son smoking team (Jay Dagner?) that review, open boxes, and do other crazy stuff some of it is funny other is like, ok and why am I interested in you. lol. You def. need to be looking and weeding through them which takes time as well. But human nature is funny like that always woundering what will come next. if you all have any specific presenters that have helped you out please let me know...

The Dagners are a bit much for me. Jay has put out some great videos, but recently it seems like he and his dad have the need to perform as they have gotten more subs. I will still watch from time to time, but end up with the more subtle folks.I follow quite a few, but find myself digging dighsx, matches860 and longlost00 quite a bit (and all for different reasons). There are a variety of others who I will go back and watch, but they aren't active any more.

Ha! That is totally true. I hadn't looked at videos for years because I made the mistake of trying to find videos back in 2008 when there wasn't a pipe community. They start out normal enough, until suddenly there's a creepy leather wearing dude with a gas-mask and various "bears" (not Yogi) huffing and puffing away.
