Sometimes life gives you lemonade, sometimes lemons. And sometimes it give you a great big uppercut to the nether regions.

There are always a lot of threads around this place with titles like "if you could only choose one" and "what would you pick if you had to..." Well, without going into the boring details, I now find myself in pretty much that situation. After years of trying stuff, and collecting shaving gear, and everything else that took my interest, I am now going from having half a house to store my stuff, to one small bedroom.

Basically I am going to pack two trunks. One will have clothing, the other will have everything else I need. Two trunks, plus my computer. That's it. The rest is getting boxed up and going into storage.

So, just because there are so many hypothetical "If you could only take..." threads, I though you might be interested what someone who owns a big collection and hoard of shaving products actually chose when the pressure was on, and space was very limited.

proxy.php

Two straights, a very hollow Swede, and a quarter hollow US. Both very different razors, but I like the feel of them both.
Two Coticules, a fast and a slow one. With just these and the slurry stone I should be able to handle any honing requirements that come up.
Two AS, Clubman and Arlington. Again, very different, and providing variety.
One brush. Vintage butterscotch Simpson handle with TGN finest.
One lather mug. I face lather, but I can soak and rest my brush in it.
One safety razor and blades. A Rocket HD. Simple, reliable and honest.
One soap, two sticks of Palmolive Euro. Again, reliable and simple. Never fails to work.
One strop. Veg tanned kangaroo and linen.

And that is all I need, if I have to be honest. With the possible exception of running out of soap and AS, and that needing replacement, this is my shaving rig for the next foreseeable future. And you know what? I really don't mind. It is actually nice being able to whittle away the superfluous stuff and get back to the basics. I think a lot of us tend to prop ourselves up with excess, I do anyway. I always have ten of something which I really only need one or two of. It ties you down and stops you appreciating the individual objects, in a funny way.

So, that's the shaving stuff. What else should I pack into 2.5'x1.5'x1' trunk which I plan on living out of for who knows how long? What would you guys take? I'm interested in any suggestions or thoughts on this new minimalist set-up I'm building, and what you would do with a similar plan.

Congratulations on " trimming down " .
I would have to have my Sony flat screen with my kliptch surround sound,

I hope the circumstances leading to your den reduction are not too dire. It sounds like you are willing to soldier on, but I hope you did not lose your home or anything like that.

I'd take my Tech and Slant; Aqua Velva and Virgin Island Bay Rum; Peppermint and Fresh Brewed Coffee soaps by Suds and Sparkles. Although, I may want Root Beer and my Williams, too. But, that sounds good to me.

Thanks Mate. No, I'm not on a park bench just yet. :wink2:

Let's just say our home turned out to be her house, and leave it at that. All you can do is soldier on and try to see the positives. Plenty of people have been in much worse situations than this. It is inconvenient, and a bit scary, but not so dire when you take a step back and try to look at all objectively.

Shaving stuff only

Gillette Fatboy / Astra SP / Arko / Alum / Nivea sensitive shave balm / my $2 goodwill store bowl and Boar brush

Other stuff

Yashica 124G camera and of course the cat

I travelled for some years with only what i could fit into my backpack and actually having fewer posessions a nice way to be.

David, may your transition can be a smooth one, and hopefully it turns out to be for the best. You make a great point about the excess that most of us are used to, it's hard to think of it that way until something comes about to put it into perspective... there is a large percentage of the world's population that would be ecstatic with one quarter of what you have in your photo.
With that being said, surely you can find a corner to stash a travel bag full of your extra gear right?!? :biggrin1:

you'd put your cat in a 2.5' X 1.5' X 1' trunk!?!?!

I'd say my gillette TTO, Astra SP, proraso AS cream, alum, puck of Mikes Natural Soaps orange/cedar/peppercorn soap and my omega brush

Other stuff? my tablet, and hopefully some, if not all, of my chain maille supplies.

When I first started out (and for a few years after that) I was living full time in a 1978 holiday trailer working in a mine. Space was somewhat at a premium... but more than that, it was just stupid to have more than one thing to shave with living that lifestyle. I did not have to pare down a collection- but I did try a few razors and get rid of the weakest with each acquisition (think survivor.) I lived with a Norton 4000 / 8000 hone and lapping paper (is that the correct term?) a vintage strop by Carl Monkhouse (still my usual strop), and a small, glass pyrex bowl for lathering. A bottle of Brut (Dad always wore Brut) and Pinaud lime sec were the scents.

It was an amazingly simple set-up and I was not into DEs at the time, so just the straight. Eventually, I believe, I collected a Henkles and Soligen in blue scales and a DD gold edge as my blades and stopped buying anymore believing they were not necessary (yes, the collection had grown to 3 blades by the time I rejoined civilization.) Now I am in a house again and the collection has ballooned. I look at it and wonder why I have it all. There are razors that I have not used in two years.

Now that I am in a house again I found my collection has ballooned. I will be honest, if I had to pare back down I would probably keep most of what is listed above from when I started out. The only changes would be the brush (I have a personalized Shavemac that may not be the best I own, but I love it and it was my first real splurge at buying something that I REALLY did not need (and could not sell- anybody want a Shavemac with Daniel. J. M___ engraved on it?) I would trade in the blue scaled razor for a Henckles Friodur. and The Lime Sec would get replaced by... I really do not know yet.

I think you have made a good decision on your products and you really are right about appreciating items more when there are fewer. A collection is nice to look at- but you never really take the time to get to know the individual shavers intimately and appreciate the subtleties and craftsmanship. I know that people will argue this, but I would say that when you have more you just compare one to another instead of enjoying it for exactly what it is. You start to think that your favourite shaver would look better if it were jacketed in the scales on an old rusted razor and had the etching of another razor, the jimps of yet another and the worked back of the razor that never could hold an edge. You start to almost become dissatisfied with the most amazing shaver you own. It almost becomes a sickness of dissatisfaction with the best razor ever produced...

From one bloke to another - you've always got mates here. Embrace the change.

And when life gives you lemons - you can always add tequila and triple sec and just give the bugger a shake!

I've gone minimalist after a thread that popped up (maybe last year?).
The only tough part I had to deal with was the brush.
I have some great brushes but if I had to go with one, I know now what I'd choose.

I'll snap a pic later when I have time, but here we've got the bases covered:
Gillette Toggle (plated in Rhodium)
Gem G-Bar
Boker Red Injun 101 RP
Rooney Finest 1/2
Feather DE blades
GEM SE blades (from the group buy)
Thayer's WH
Roo strop
RazoRock King Louie
Tom Ford Tuscan Leather

Since I can, I switch out the fragrance with something new all the time.
But the rest is pretty much my daily use stuff.
Right now I'm trying to kill off a lot of my soaps I have.

I have a coticule but I never mastered it. I send my straights off to be honed when I can't finish them any longer on the coticule.

As for other things I'd take, I would be naked without my Tag Heuer, Montblanc 149 and Edison B&B 2012.
Of course, this may all change, but as of right now, that's what I'd pack up.

Here is my problem so to speak. I have narrowed down to about 6 creams and soaps from the 30+ that I have. I just do not know what to do with the rest of my products, as I did spend quite a bit of money on them.

Hey Legion,

If it's any consolation mate it appears your den is not the only thing you're de-cluttering - !

This is true. Sometimes it gets so you can't see the forest for the trees. And life is a big game of snakes and ladders. But... you just keep playing. There is no point tipping over the board and storming off every time you go down a snake. You will never win that way. Well that is my "post bottle of wine philosophy" on it tonight, anyway.

As I have said before, worse things have happened to better people. I have my health. I'm not starving. And tomorrow is another day.

So that's all for feeling sorry for myself. What would you guys pack into your trunk if you had to get out of Dodge? Not just shaving stuff, what would you need for your daily use?

David, best of luck as you turn a new page.

I forgot to add...

If I were living out of a trunk for an extended period, I would keep - A block of Cella, RV Beehive w/ TGN finest, Feather AC, and a bottle of clubman.

Been there, done that. Sucks, but it does get better. Some, including yourself, have suggested less is better, and I agree. It simplifies things, and makes us focus on enjoying what we have, not wishing for what we don't. When you think about it, your kit is probably closer to what our grandparents had than the crazy shave dens we now accumulate. You're more connected to traditional wetshaving now.

Good luck and happy shaving.

Mate, not unexpected but sorry to hear how things have worked out. +1 to Mad Man's comment too

Shaving wise some great selections although I would leave all the straights behind myself :)

What else would I take apart from clothes and computer? Interesting question. Maybe my DSLR. A couple of favourite books, a couple of kitchen items I could not live without (my knives and a pan I could probably live with as my only cookware) and I'm not sure what else.

A friend of mine moved around a lot. He went where the work was.
He always kept 2 large suitcases and only kept what packed into those bags.
If he accumulated too much stuff, he packed what he wanted and either sold the rest or gave it away.
He must have moved every couple of months or so.
Sometimes even within the same city if it was a big enough city.

I have so much junk at home I can't even move around sometimes.
