Loft length for face lathering

Hello,

I am a happy user of an Omega 48 boar brush, Its knot measures 28x70mm.

I am planning to get an Oumo boar bristle brush. They have two lofts: 55 and 70mm.

I do not know what to do since I have no experience with shorter lofts. I feel comfortable using the 70mm one; the only downside/pleasure is the amount of lather you produce. At a certain point, you cannot keep on lathering. It is not a clear complaint, but something to remark on for a better context.

Your opinion and experience are much appreciated.

Ditto, ditto
I like some stiffness, so, I face lather with mid-sized boars exclusively... 24x50 or 24x55 (Semogue SOCs are fantastic knots). I had several Zenith 507s in the past, but, 27x57 was just too big for me, and I have a fat face.

Personally, I find that there are other characteristics of a knot (density, hair grade, treatment level, etc.) that influence the feeling of a boar way, way more than the loft. You can get tall boars that are stiff and pokey and short boars that are soft and splaying.

If I was in your shoes, I would probably go 55mm and hope that the hairs are appropriately soft. Assuming that nobody comes along with experience of these knots that can compare them for you.

Keep it simple, use what you have, that you like, why make a big deal out of Lathering? OMG I have sub., $10.00 Boar Bristle Omega, should I scrap what works for me.

Back in 1950's and later before the Internet, Shove Forums, we just Shaved not think much about the process, tool, blades, preshaqves, or?? Except we Shaved to remove Beard growth.

Thx for your contribution,

The new two options are 29x55 and 29x70.

I like thick brushes. My only concern was the loft.

THx again.

Sorry, my bad.

The knot is 70, but the loft is 55. That is 15mm inside the handle.
So, I think I will give it a try to 29x55.

Thx.

You can't look at loft length as an isolated variable.
You have to consider, among other things, the knot size and ratio of the knot to the loft. 65mm loft may work for a 28mm brush, but probably not a 18mm brush as it would be absurdly floppy. Inversely, a 43mm loft will work fine for a < 24mm knot, but a 30mm knot with that short a loft would be another story.

There's also fiber width and fiber density to consider as well as how much 'give' each individual hair or fiber has. A large knot with short loft can't be too dense if you, like most, like to splay your brushes when lathering. A dense 26x60 brush will behave differently than a less dense 26x60.

Again, you just can't arrive at any precise conclusions looking at any single isolated factor...To say nothing of individual taste and other variables beyond the aforementioned.

My own observations and dead reckoning suggest that 24x55 seems to be a rough average brush dimension, so in this case I think the 55mm option you mentioned would be a better bet. You tried a longer loft, so a 55 will provide you the ability to experience a shorter loft and decide for yourself which you prefer in any given situation

So clever.
<thx for your help.

I face-lather almost exclusively. However, I prefer badgers with a 2:1 loft to knot diameter ratio. With boars, I like higher loft (in the range under discussion here).

I haven’t tried a boar with a loft shorter than the Omega 48. But synthetics and badgers work perfectly fine with short lofts. The Semgoue boars have lofts of around 55mm if I’m not mistaken, and they seem to be quite popular. With a shorter loft, the splay isn’t so extreme - in the case of the Omega 48, when I fully splay the brush, the bristles cover up my entire cheek - overkill in my opinion.

That's exactly my situation.

Never other than the Omega 48.

If I change, I will lose and win.

But I wanted information and experiences before swapping.

Thx.
