I've been collecting the things long enough to know once you reach a certain point a watch is a luxury item and the cost bears no relationship to what it is worth. So having said that I would never spend much over $1500 or so on any watch. In times past I have but not any more. As a matter of fact I enjoy my cheaper watches more than my expensive ones.
There is also a known issue that the larger, more expensive and more polished a watch the greater the chances it will encounter some large heavy object.
