What's new

Wow - Wilkinson Sword Light Brigades are sharp.

I started a new Wilkinson Sword Light Brigade blade on Monday. First day was a #15 Aristocrat, second day was a President and third day was a New Standard. All wonderful BBS shaves. I was feeling brave this morning for the fourth shave and loaded it into my Merkur Slant. I reckon it took four of my seven layers of skin and every skerrick of whisker I had. I think it scared the whiskers into not growing because it's now 10 hours later and I've still pretty much got BBS. Crickey those blades are sharp after three triple pass shaves.

Where did you get them from? Can you post a pic please?

Sure, I'll put one up in the next day or two. I bought quite a few (140 I think) from a member here. I've fallen in love with vintage blades so I pretty much grab them any chance I get although I think I've got about 20 years worth at home now seeings as each blade comfortably lasts a minimum of 8 shaves and some up to 12.

That's great. NOS Wilkinsons are hard to find and also some of the best DE blades ever made.

I've been lucky recently and picked up Gillette Swedes and Spoilers, Schick Kronas, Wilkinson Sword Light Brigades and Personna 74's.

I'm glad to hear that you can get that many shaves from them, John, I could only manage 3. But I have a pretty tough beard so it is not surprising.

I had shave number five with the Light Brigade this morning in a #22 Aristocrat. Another triple pass BBS. The #22 Aristocrat is no where near as aggressive as the slant I used yesterday but you could feel that the blade is still literally razor sharp. I'll easily get a full week out of it.

This is what the Light Brigade blades look like.

Yep, that's them!

There is also another blister pack with a scene of the Battle of Waterloo.

I'm a bit less impressed with these blades than most people, it seems. Don't get me wrong, they are very good blades, but for me Personna 74s are smoother. YMMV, etc.

Excellent John, keep it coming!

I had shave #6 today with the Light Brigade in an old style aggressive EJ open comb and got probably the best DE shave I've ever had. That is one seriously aggressive DE. I really had to treat it like an SE razor.

I couldn't say as I haven't used the ones in that auction. What I can say though is that I've only had very good experiences with vintage blades regardless of the make. Personna, Gillette, Schick and Wilkinson Sword have all been so much better than modern blades. Modern blades are as sharp as vintage blades but don't last anywhere near as long. I get three triple pass shaves out of a modern blade, I can easily get seven out of a vintage blade and have pushed some vintage blades as far as twelve.

I believe that. That auction, I won, so I was hoping those Wilkies were good.

Anyway, I can understand what you're saying because I am done with shave 12 with the Wilkinson Bonded single blade cart. No end in site. And it's just a thin strip of metal. Don't tell me they couldn't still make blades that last like that, as smooth as that. Instead, a Fusion cart lasted me 4 shaves, 5 max.

Anyway, it's getting boring and my PILS is threatening a violent rampage if I don't get to him soon. So I'm stopping at 14 regardless.

Anyone else used those English Wilkies in the white, black and red packaging like in that auction?

I have a few packages of them and they are very close to LBs. Actually pretty hard to distinguish.

By the way, the Wilkinson Bonded cartridges, I agree, are tremendous. I just recently reached 13 shaves on one and I am certain that I could squeeze out a few more.

Well I have shave seven today with the Light Brigade. It was pretty much the same as yesterday. Same aggressive old style EJ open comb, three passes and BBS. I decided to retire the LB to the blade bank. I could feel that the edge was not as sharp as it was but it was still along way from tugging. I could have got another 2-4 shaves out of it without a problem but I think I'll just retire the vintage blades after a full week. It makes it easy to remember that every Monday morning it's time to get out a new blade.

Next week is going to be a Schick Plus Platinum.
