Would this work on a DE blade?

This was my grandpa's. He used to be a barber.

Very dull razors made extra keen with few strokes either diagonally or straight strokes may be used. Wipe steel off surface with damp cloth. Use hone dry.

Anybody know anything about this? If I run a DE blade on it, would it sharpen / de-burr it? Or is this strictly for straight use?

This wont be for sale, it's a family heirloom thing, just wondering if it will collect dust or if I can make use of it.

It would be hard to hone the DE blade up unless you had appliance to hold it as you hone it. Also most stainless DE blades are coated.

Yes.

I recall a member using some sort of a hone to resharpen a Feather blade. It worked well and he got many good shaves from it. But, he was doing it out of interest more than anything else and probably only did it to that one blade. As the others have mentioned, it is really tough to hold the blade, not to mention that the blade bends so easily that it would be tough to keep a consistent angle.

On the up side, you could always by a cheap straight razor for $20 or so dollars and use the hone the way it was meant to be used:thumbup:

I have a jig that I purchased a while back that holds DE (or SE, or other "not meant to be honed") blades and allows a person to sharpen them. I have used it a couple times to hold a kitchen knife that I wanted to put a really consistent bevel on, and once for a removable blade that I couldn't find a replacement for. It works alright, but the ball bearing on one side is seized completely, causing problems. I plan on using it to sharpen a Stainless DE blade that I have been using off and on for about a year, just haven't gotten around to it yet.
