Worth restoring?

Hi guys. I'm trying to decide is this worth a restore or a pass? Scale is wood (unknown type ATM) and it's a James Johnson blade. Any other idea when it might have been made?

If I do this, it'll be my first restore. I've been reading through the threads, trying to decide if it's worth the time & money.

I see alot of acrylic & new wood scales talk, but nothing on trying to bring back original ones. Let me know what you think.

I say go for it! Plenty of life left in that steel, I would pass on unpinning and do some VERY light sanding on the scales then seal them. Use coating of choice but I would lean toward CA. I would sand the blade through a progression of papers and do a light buff to shine it up some.

If you want new scales, I have some Interesting lighter colored wood you may like, I would be happy to PIF you a set ready for drilling and pinning if you would like.

Well worth it. Are you sure its wood? Looks like very old horn. Most old razors like that had horn scales. Good luck. Nice blade.

Looking at the scales I agree with Hillbilly they look like horn, they usually clean up very nicely. That blade should also clean up nicely.

Looks good. I'd unpin, sand down the scales, clean up the steel.
I'd look into sanding down the scales to clean up the area by the washers.
That's just me - I like it to be clean everywhere. No point in doing 1/2 a job.

Well, sadly, I managed to break the scales ... so I'll be working on a total restore (new scales, blade/polish, etc...)...

And while I had them in an open state, I believe these are actually horn of some sort... what type of animals' horn is used?:confused1
