What's new

Worth a try I think

I've been thinking about ways to clean up light rust and gunge on a blade. I remembered years ago helping my Dad rebuild a couple of car engines and he used grinding pastes to grind and polish the valves. I had a chat with him today and he said it might actually work quite well at cleaning up a straight blade. Anyway, I've ordered some coarse and fine paste and I'll give it a go and see how it turns out.

The valve grinding pastes, I well remember Clover, are usually starting at about 200 grit and then about a 600 grit for the final polishing. In my opinion they would be ok for the first rust removal but use them sparingly. Scrape the rust off with an 'xacto' first to get rid of the really hard rust!! Otherwise you will be cutting the blade and not the rust because the black shiny rust is really hard! I have found that a 'gojo' type hand cleaner is a good first cleaner and does not seem to ruin scales. They are made with pumice/rottenstone and that breaks down to a fine powder quite quickly.
