Wood Brush Handle

I have a brush (no name silvertip) with a wooden handle that has a small crack, which begins near the knot. I'd like to know if there is anything I can do to prevent the crack on the handle to become worse?

The brush is 22mm knot, about 48 loft and the handle is an hour glass shape about 50mm tall. I really like the knot on the brush and shape/size of the handle.
Any suggestions?

Fill the crack with epoxy wood filler, then refinish the handle with thinned spar varnish.
