Wisdom From a Shaving Connoisseur

Okay, so I am something of a shaving connoisseur.

I have tried pretty much half the brands in the drug store over the years. These are my findings.

1. The best aftershave I have found, surprisingly, is Gillette Intense Cooling Lotion. This has been a recent discovery. It stops the itch I feel after shaving better than any other brand.
2. Runner up isn't really an aftershave at all. Nivea Energy Gel, the stuff smells great and does a great job at easing the itch. But often when it dries, it leaves a snake skin type residue on my neck and under my chin.
3. Nivea sensitve balm smells great, but barely works at all.
4. Nivea replenish and cool kick work very well. CK has alcohol so you definitely get a burn for a few moments, but that's kind of what I look for as a man putting on a man's aftershave.
5. Nivea with aloevera is very greasy. It works okay, but the green colour of it, and its greasiness, make it not a great choice unless nothing else is in the medicine cabinet.
6. L'Oreal for Men aftershave balm MOD EDIT one of the worst products ever. You definitely feel a burni afterwards, no cooling effect at all, despite what is written on the box. Surprisingly their Turbo Booster organge moisturizer works fairly well as an aftershave.
7. Aqua Velvet - Okay, but nothing special
8. Brut balm - as above.
9. Aqua Velvet Ice - Terrible smell. So bad, it makes the product unusable.

And that, ladies and gents, is my list of do's and don't for aftershaves.

May I humbly suggest the connoisseur step away from the Walmart shaving items aisle and try some different AS items?

welcome to the B&B forums, you are in for a treat!

there is a whole world out there of classic, international and artisan After-Shaves that you've never imagined! Not to menton soaps/creams, fragrances, ad infinitum

grab a seat... stick a round :)

Itching after a shave is not normal. I think rather than trying out a bunch of different aftershaves, you should attack the root of the problem, and find out what is causing the itch in the first place.

What products do you actually use to shave with? What type of razor? How many passes?

Ouch, you are being quite generous with 5%...

In a moment of almost unfathomable generosity, I decided to assume that he tried 10x the number of aftershaves that he listed, which should bring my number closer to reality.

I would suggest that you try the Pinaud Clubman selection, all the Aqua Velva, Skin Bracer and probably venture yourself in those ethnic grocery stores as they often have hidden gems... But the full line of the first 3 are a must...

Welcome to B&B. You seem to talk about "feeling the burn" and dealing with itchy skin. Maybe you should try some AS/ASBs without alcohol (personally I'm a big fan of Pre de Provence). They may not be "manly" enough for you, but I have found that there is something very manly about treating your skin right.

Part of the fun with AS is first trying the mass market ones and then going to the specialty AS. It gives you something to compare against. Oh, and you'll never go back to mass market once you try the boutique AS.
