Wilkinson Sword from Walmart - fantastic shave!

So, I'm not a newbie at all, and I don't even post much in the shaving forums, since I know what I like. I was in Walmart (God forgive me) to buy a couple items for my mom (who's 84 and fell and broke her ankle). Back story, she needs some things down at her house to help her get around the bathroom, rails and such for shower and toilet, and Walmart was the cheapest. Anyway, since I was in the pharmacy/grooming/healthcare section, I thought I'd look for any DE blades they might have. Haven't shopped at Walmart for a while. I saw Wilkinson Sword blades, the only DE blades they had. I looked at the package and it said they were made in Germany. Ten blades for $1.76, so not too bad a deal for a local store. I grabbed a pack.

Now, I've tried lots of blades, probably not as many as some of you, but these were damn sharp. I last shaved on Sunday morning (yeah, I was a little scruffy, normally would have shaved on Tuesday) But, I'm going out tonight, so I thought I'd shower and shave. Did my usual routine, which is nothing really. I use Williams soap (no laughing please), face lather. I popped one of these Wilkinson blades in my trusty Merkur HD. It actually caught my finger skin twice, and I'm no novice to loading a blade. I thought, these seem sharp. Man oh man, the whiskers just slid off. I had to really lighten up on the pressure. I don't know if I got just a good batch or what, but these worked better than Feathers (normally stereotyped as the sharpest, I've read) by FAR. I think I had a BBS after two passes on most of my face, and that was with a five day growth. Normally I get a little tugging when my whiskers are this long, but damn, I felt nothing but smooth. One of the best shaves I've ever had in my life. I've been shaving like this for a couple years, and with a brush and shave soap for a couple years before that, but this was incredible.

Full disclosure, I hate Walmart; hate what they have done to mom and pop stores, and I never shop there. But I may have to go back and get several more packs of these blades. This is NOT an endorsement of Walmart, but these blades are great. I'll update after I've had a few more shaves.

I started with those exact blades about 3 months ago. For me, they are not bad, but they are not as shart as the Feather, nor the Gillette Blacks. But what is important is that you found a blade that works great and at a great price

I have some waiting to be used. I also saw some at Walmart and couldn't resist. I will definitely post my impressions when I get around to trying them.

I guess I'm the guy with the variable mileage. Just tried the WalMart Wilkinsons. It was ok but did not perform as well for me as some other blades and was noticably duller at the end of the second 4-pass shave. I'll give another one a try sometime next week. They'll do in a pinch but I'll be surprised if I learn to like them well enough to stock up.

I saw another thread about the Wilkinson line. These were in a black plastic case with a white label. And the outer package said made in Germany, as I mentioned.

I like the Wilkinson blades also. I grab a pack or two whenever at Walmart. I get a closer shave with them than some of the more popular blades.

Toothpick

Needs milk and a bidet!
another blade i must try! i've seen these there and thought "eh, blades from walmart?" now i'll give em a try

Great, now the secret is out on Wally Wilkes. I better run to my local Walmart and clear the shelf before it's out of stock. These are great blades for me, its what I started with 9 months ago and use them regularly.

That is the blade I started with. Yes, it was from walmart. I then tried the derbys and did not like them. So, I went back to the Wilkinson swords. I bought some Personna labs, I think they are labs and they work great. I have still been using the Wilkinsons but only in my merkur because the merkur seems to match up with them very well. I still have 29 wilkinsons left and I will keep the stock up for when I use the merkur.

These were the very first blades I tried when I started DE shaving. I have been through quite a few samples. I have 75 Personna Labs and 50 Feathers in the den and the last two blade changes I made in my R41 were to the Wilkies.

Whats the difference between Walmart Wilkinsons and other Wilkinsons?

To my knowledge, there are only two kinds of Wilkinsons being manufactured today; the German-made "Walmart" Wilkies, and the Indian-made Gillette-Wilkinsons. I don't hear much about the second kind.

There some of the NOS UK-made vintage Wilkinsons around, which are a highly-regarded blade.

I started with the walmart wilkinsons and found them to be a great starter blade. They are not the sharpest blade in my arsenal, but do a decent job. I would recommend them for beginners as well as someone who is just in a hurry so you don't remove too much skin.

+1

Good to start with, but not the sharpest, and (to me) much better than the Derby blade I tried this morning :cursing:

Congrats on a successful first shave with the Wally Wilkies. Let us know how the subsequent shaves are.
