Why Wet Shaving is like Golf

This is just my opinion/ observation.

I've been wet shaving for some time now, and it seems to me that its a lot like golf.

Like shooting a really good round of golf, I've come to accept that I'll never get that BBS shave. I did it once but it was a total accident, I have no idea what I did, it just happened. In golf whenever I play a good round (for me that's anything below 90), it just happens and there is no way I can recreate it. As in golf, I always try to find that one piece of gear that's going to do it, but its not the gear. What I love about both shaving and golf, is the pursuit and challenge. Trying to capture that elusive perfect moment which I can never repeat on a consistent basis. That's what keeps me coming back.

Anyone else feel the same way?

Dave

Wet Shaving is like Golf because In golf you have adjustable drivers and in shaving you have adjustable razors.

Also, as a newbie, I am finding that like when I play golf, I need to slow down and just let it happen. When I try too hard I mess up. My shaves have been getting better every time. I just slow down and let the razor do the work.

How about deciding which razor to use...i.e., sometimes, I use my Schick G4 for cleanup, after an mostly great shave with my Weber. In golf, sometimes you need a mashie and sometimes you need a niblick, so you should carry both in your kit. :lol1:

Excellent analogy. It's hit or miss with the quest for a BBS shave(under 100 round) but a bad day at the course is better than a good day at work. Just like a bad shave is better than a cart and a can of goo, because I've slowed down to enjoy the process. Very good way to look at it. Keep hackin' away at the course and on your beard. :thumbup1:

I understand and agree with the comparison. My difference is that I enjoy shaving (not golf). Miniature golf with silly obstacles and laughing with family/friends (and a good hot dog, grilled and somewhat charred, with ketchup and mustard on a lightly toasted bun) is my preference for golf-related activities!

Second, I have become reasonably competent at shaving in a month or three.

Lastly, if I thought shaving was expensive . . .

Wet Shaving is like Golf
because in Golf you have to know the lay of the course
and in shaving you have to know how the Coarse hair lays.

Pretty good analogy. The biggest comparison to be drawn between the 2 is patience I think. Patience to not rush your backswing, patience not to rush your transition to the downswing, patience to keep your head down and let the club release down the swing plane. Same thing in shaving. Short, even strokes letting the weight of the razor do the work all the while maintaining your blade angle. Not always easy, just like golf.

I have a personal golf story, but this isn't the place to tell it and hijack the thread.

Shaving is like golf because... I don't know; I don't golf. But sometimes I use a cart when I shave.

Agreed great analogy because both have / pursue / can be:

Excellence - Hole in 1 or BBS
Finely crafted / engineered equipment - clubs / razors, balls / soaps & creams
Cruel - swinging well crap score - feeling great bad shave - and visa versa
Coming back for more they drag you back - a birdie on the 18th after a crap round - a BBS after an average week
Expensive - no explanation needed
Manly pursuits - see above
Weird - both are difficult to explain to others not involved - see above
Tradition - oddly both often have Barbicide in the clubrooms - combs for golf / razors for shaving
19th Hole - Club Bar drinking and swapping stories - old style barber shops swapping stories
Public - we wear golf shirts in public - we wear AS in public
Unwrapping - unwrapping that promising new ball which is guaranteed to go 100 metres more ...just before you hit it in the lake - unwrapping that new blade which will shave you smoother than a politician at a rally ....just before it turns your face into mincemeat

Now the analogy is not perfect of course so some differences:
Different uniforms - if people shave using a Callaway towel well I guess that's an exception and I can add that back to similarities
Multiple Clubs / Razors - I don't buy clubs as often as razors
Betting - I would never bet on me having a BBS hmmm then again I wouldn't bet on me getting a decent score most of the time

Hmmm I think I am done.... now back to work !

Don't forget the Mantic analogy...you want to complete both (a round of golf and a shave) with the fewest stokes possible. Think he refers to it as "shaving par". That one always stuck with me.

I agree except that I noticed that my shaving technique is definitely improving while my golf game is not. Then I realized that I get to shave every day while I'm lucky if I get to golf once a week for 6 months out of the year.

I like this analogy. As a relatively new golfer and a relatively seasoned DE shaver, I can see how the comparison works. Astute observation!
