Why use a safety razor?

I have never used one. I was asking my father about them and he said he was never so happy when other razors came out and he didn't have to use a safety razor anymore. I am very new to this. What are the benefits of shaving with a safety razor? Thanks!!

For me, it's the cost. The blades are many times cheaper than cartridges. $12 can get you 100 quality double edged blades for a safety razor. The shaves, in my opinion, are much closer than cartridge shaves as well.

For many others, it's because cartridge razors can cause ingrown hairs. This isn't a problem for me, but I'm sure others can chime in on this.

Welcome to B&B!

10) It comes with cool jargon and it's own forum, and all the free enablers you could ever want.
9) they're abundant if you look in the right places, helpful in preventing buildup of that green crud called "money"
8) They're cheap to buy, easy to clean up, easy to maintain (cheaper than antique guns, too)
7) it builds character and confidence
6) proper technique provides lesser chance of irritation
5) it's a gateway vice, and everyone needs one of those.
4) it keeps me busy while my wife occupies the mirror in the morning.
3) never a lack of sharp things to cut tags off of shirts with once you get into sampler packs (that's what I saved the Merkurs for, at least)
2) chicks dig it, until you marry one and she starts seeing signs of hoarding. Then you end up with Oprah in your house.
1) one word- "faceturbating". Try DE shaving and figure it out (unless you're 12, in which case.... well.... you'll figure out the reference soon enough).

I agree with cOry.

I get a cleaner closer shave, I don't suffer ingrown hairs, my skin is in better condition and the razors are a damn sight cheaper than the cartridges. The initial costs may seem a bit steep (razor, blades, brush, soap) but you don't have to buy the most expensive pieces of kit!

I genuinely believe that the soaps or creams we use are better for the skin than the foams or gels in cans. The other thing is that shaving this way encourages you to slow down and be careful. I consider the adverts for the latest cartridges promote speed.

Frankly using the latest cartridges instead of safety razors is to sacrifice quality for convenience.

Well said, and in the end, once you get the technique down, it just feels great.

DE razors shave better than any cartridge out there, costs less, are better for the environment and most of all, they make shaving fun again!

Despite shaving everyday I never have razor burn, and I always have a smooth face.

$25 bought me a razor for life and $15 buys me two years worth of blades. and that's changing them before they get dull!!

oh and this is a big one for work....my 5 o'clock shadow doesn't show up until about 10pm

The reason why I switched to a safety razor was for a better/smoother shave. I don't care too much about the cost, if my Mach 3 gave me better results I would still be using it...luckily I took a chance and saw the light.

You can always try it, there are plenty of razors to choose/try. You should find out what works best for you and stick with it.

Great post.......I love it!! :thumbup1:

I shaved for 19 years with a cartridge - always getting bumps on my neck. I just accepted this as "it's just part of shaving". After changing to a DE razor March this year, the bumps disappeared within a week!

I used to get really bad ingrown hairs. They would always show up in one of two places on my neck. In all my pictures through high school and the beginning of college, you will always see a big red bump somewhere on my neck. I started using a DE half-way through college, and the big red bumps went away. The Sunday/Monday before the Fourth, I was out of town on business, traveling light, so I just took my cartridge razor (which I had not used in years) and some good quality cream. The bumps came back...both of them at the same time. The same place they always showed up. They are just now starting to go away. It is beyond frustrating.

It's a matter of preference, and beyond that, PRIDE -

I'd rather shave with a razor built to last ( D-4 Fatboy ), than a disposable that will be in tomorrow's trash:biggrin1:

why, eh?

Cheaper.

Closer shave.

Better shave.

Funner shave.

Less ingrown hairs.

Environmentally friendlier shave.

Support of honest businesses versus Corporations marking up blades 1000%.

Lots of reasons.

For one, I get to shave with the razor my grandfather gave me years ago. That's huge. Second, the blades are a lot cheaper. Third, and most importantly, I get better shaves than I ever did with a cartridge.

I also own, appreciate and occasionally use a couple of straight razors. They shave wonderfully, but the maintenance and upkeep are a bit more than simply tossing a blade into the blade bank. When I get an uptick in free time, I will likely return to using one.

d) all of the above

(isn't this always d in those multiple choice questions?)

Actually I wonder if the premise is wrong - Why use a cartridge 'shaving system'?

You forgot "chicks dig scars"! Wait, that's straight razors! Nevermind, I use both. No scars!

I will not repeat all the true things that have been said once more but I would like to add from my personal experience that DE-shaving and even more so straight shaving, together with all the paraphernalia that goes with it, is a contemplative undertaking which strikes a stark contrast to the speed and stress of the rat race. It is a ritual that is so absorbing in its own right that, for a moment, you forget everything that might be troubling you and the end result is so good that it enriches my day. I realize that it is a privilege to have enough time on your hands to enjoy this experience but I take that time by getting up earlier or going to bed later.

IMO the cartridge-razor only have two advantages both of which I personally do not care for: speed and brain-dulling
simplicity of use. They have been developed to fit into the daily rat race at the expense of shave quality and comfort and only bring real benefit to the manufacturer.
