Why such a big price difference per 100? Astra(9) vs. Feather(36)

I would say forget the price and go with the blades you really like whatever they maybe. 100 blades will last a long time!

Seems to be within a few dollars of the average price, it fluctuates on Amazon.

There are more expensive blades than the Feathers I believe, they just seem to be the most expensive and most popular one.

The Polsilvers/SI's aren't cheap...

Feathers are on the more expensive side of the DE blades. They are just about the sharpest DE blade out there. This is neither good nor bad, it just is. Some people prefer a less sharp blade for their skin type. I love Feathers, but I will not likely get too many more of them because I often get skin irritation from them. They are too darned sharp! Astra SP is one of the best values in the DE blades. It is a great blade that agrees with a very large number of shavers. I like it a lot. It is a very sharp and smooth blade. Not as sharp as Feather, but very sharp. For me it is an easier blade to get along with than Feather, but even Astra SP may be too sharp for me. I enjoy Merkur blades, which are not very sharp, but very smooth and also Shark blades, which are also not super sharp, but very smooth and inexpensive. Recently I have tried a Dorco ST300, which was given to me by fellow DE shaver and at first I thought it was just one of those not-so-sharp-but-very-smooth blades. I didn't use it for a while, but when I got a slant bar razor it proved to be one of the best blades for that. Also in my Merkur Progress adjustable it works extremely well at higher settings. I just ordered 100 of them from Amazon for $8 shipped. They are Korean and are extremely smooth, but not super sharp, which works for my skin type and the razors I use (more aggressive razors like Progress set to 3 or Merkur 37C slant). Your situation may be different. I love using a Feather in a mild razor like a Tech, but I hardly use that razor anymore, so my Feathers are being left alone for now. I still think they are great blades, but I don't need to pay 4 times the price of Astra for them. Also, another excellent inexpensive and very sharp, smooth and durable blade is Super Max Super Platinum at $13 and change for a 100. I have a 100 of those and I use them way more often than Feathers. Price difference largely accounts for the fact that the Feathers are Japanese and Astras are Russian, Dorco are Korean, Super Max are Indian, Shark are Egyptian. You get the idea. Cost of manufacturing is a little different in Japan, I think. Still, Feather is a solid product and some people swear by them and do not use anything else. It's a YMMV world of wet shaving. If they work for you better than any other blade, then they are worth the price.

Good luck.

Feathers are great blades and are my favorite. Having said that, I think that are too expensive and will not purchase any more. I think the Astra sp (shaved with one this morning) is a great blade and is a true value a thier current price. I also love Personna labs (my current go to blade). I find that they are almost as good as the Feather blades, but are priced great at $13 shipped for 100.

I don't have any experience with Feathers, but I'm currently working my way through a 100-count of Astras. Can't compare the two, but I can say that the Astras do a fine job; much better than you would expect at $.11/blade.

Where can you buy Super Max Super Platinum in a 100 count? Looked in a few places and they are sold out.... bummer

I got mine at RazorBladesAndMore, but they seem to be out of stock there now. Bummer is right. Great blades. So are the Super Max Titanium and Sunrise, but more expensive. Astra SP are great value and usually very available.

I also just bought a 100 of Dorco ST300 for $8 shipped ($3 for blades and $5 shipping) from Amazon. I think that's going to be my goto for a while with Prpgress set at 3+. I get great results from that combo.

Feathers are a great blade, as are Astras. I generally prefer the Personna Labs over both. Think about it this way, if you use 1 blade a week this is almost a two year supply. For $10 or $40, it probably won't break the bank either way, get whatever you like best.

Welcome to B&B...

My suggestion is get the 100 count of the Astras and shave with them for at least 2 months straight.

Then you can expand your sights and even get some blades from the B&B blade exchange to try.

The Great Blade Exchange was a wonderful example of why B&B members are so great. Unfortunately, Great Blade Exchange has been suspended until further notice. Maybe it will be back in the future. I sure hope so. Justin and Paul did a fantastic job!

+1. Astra SPs are a good general benchmark. The only cheaper blade you are likely to find would be Derby, and the Astras are far superior IMHO. I personally prefer the Astra SS blades, which are a bit more expensive, but not by much.

In the absence of the blade exchange, PM me your address and I'll send you some samples to try. Unused, of course. :biggrin1:

I did not notice. I'll stop posting the link to it.

I helped Justin with the inventory insertion coding which made it easy to keep everything current in the 2nd post when the inventory changed.

I never used the exchange as I have so many different brands of blades that I play with already but it was a great way for members to try out different blades without having to by a tuck of this or that just to see if they liked something or not.

Hope it comes back soon... It was a great resource
