Why do some razors have a notch in them?

Such as this one - any insights?

It's usually called a barber's notch. Probably made it easier to open one-handed. But it's very useful for self shaving too. Going ATG on the upper lip, you can hold the tang in one hand and steady the tip with the other, with your finger in the notch.

I've always seen it as a design thing, an aesthetic addition.
There's never been anything conclusive found in a barber manual or otherwise.
Just "I think' reasons. Or the "an old barber told me that...."

As someone with facial hair who shaves with a straight, I can tell you it's useful for visibility when doing detailed work with the point on your mustache or beard, especially around the mouth.

EDIT: And as mentioned above, its useful for holding the blade by both ends when doing the various "Fool's" or "Dead Man's" passes
