What's new

Who bought the +610 Aristocrat Deluxe?

Wow that seller rakes in the money for their auctions. I believe it's a husband & wife team. They have crazy good luck in finding nice razors and they do a good job cleaning them up.

They also sell the same blades with almost every purchase!

That is crazy money. I don't understand why his stuff always seems to go for insane prices. He's got a tech right now with a current bid of $33. Even NOS, that seems very high for something that is not in a package or case.

It's very simple--he uses nice photography with over-manipulated photos that make good use of that "adjust exposure" and "adjust detail" controls in Word Photos.

Then he writes up a nice, superfluous description where everything necessary and unnecessary are described in excruciating detail. For example: "And are Nothing preventing this Case from doing exactly what Gillette manufactured it to do So many Years ago & that is to PROTECT this Great Gillette~And Protect it~it does & will continue to do so for Many, Many More Years to Come~!!!"

Why does he do this? Because he knows it works, and people will pay more for a razor with nice photos and a description that allures the imagination.

I've contacted them before. They seem to be very nice sellers. They say that most of the razors they sell are on consignment from all over the world- from collectors, pickers etc and they are in touch with antique dealers all around their area.

In doing some detective work, I looked at their eBay feedback from when they started and their business was restoring old sewing machines, so they have experience in restoration. I don't think they do plating work, but he is very good at polishing and cleaning these up.

I can tell you that this set is now in France in a friend's collection, probably one of the biggest collection of razor here, only pieces of this quality collected during the last 35 years.

.

I'm gonna play devil's advocate on this comment.

Maybe. Maybe not. Using the proper lighting setup and a good sharp lens are more key than "photo manipulation". FWIW, nearly all digital photos need some amount of sharpening applied to them as that is the nature of the beast. If you shoot photos in RAW like I do, then white balance and possibly exposure adjustment has to be made. Everyone always assumes that good photos are over manipulated, and some are, but the overall vast majority of people don't have proper setups or gear to take a good close up product photo. A really good photographer knows how to take a good photo that needs the minimal amount of touch up.

Now, do I think his stuff is going for inflated prices. Yup, but it looks like he always has quality pieces none the less. Course this discussion of his auctions has been going on for who knows how long. :biggrin1:

Would you happen to have any photos or more information about this collection? Would love to see it.

I don't have a good setup and have to redo my photos, but I don't overdo it and know what overdone looks like.

I've been watching his auctions for years and have always read comments wondering how he gets those prices. It's the lighting and what he does with the photos. The key on the over-use of the "adjust detail" feature is to look at the knurling. It's not as obvious on this auction, but I've seen it on other auctions of his. Sometimes the knurling almost looks "pointy," it's so unnatural.

The key is to play to people's emotions and suck them in. It works and always has. I don't play to that but I might have to start. Some people here already do.

I agree, these photos are the key. Is it established those razors aren't replated as well?
