Which Shaving cream to buy ??

Hello All,

This is my first thread in this wonderful and very useful " supersite of shaving " ..

I am looking to buy a new shaving cream.

Currently i am using Proraso Sensitive Shaving Soap with Aloe and Green Tree (White tub) and looking to upgrade to "TOBS" .. I exclusively face lather ..

After reading tons and tons of review, i am undecided between TOBS Avocado or Jermyn Street .. Both get wonderful reviews and known for their performance. Then i read great reviews about "new" Proraso red tube being unbelievably good also ..

Can anyone with experience with all three recommend which one should i buy ?? I know, the obvious answer is to buy all of them or at least two but I am really looking to buy only one at the moment. Buying Shaving brush with it also.. Tight budget .. ( For Shaving brush, I cant decide between Muhle Synthetic Black Fiber "Basic 2" or "HJM" white versions. Looking for best synthetic brush under $40.. I posted this question in Shaving Brush section. )

What am i looking for ?? First and foremost, slick performance where razor would just glide (if technique is right of course) and gives the least irritation/burn etc .. I don't want menthol as i am looking for all season cream .. winter or summer ...

Appreciate if there is even better cream than these in the same price range of approx $10-20 shipped to Sydney, Australia.

Thank you .

:biggrin1:

Here in the UK i am using Taylor's of Bond Street London sandalwood shaving cream, and the BlueBeards Revenge, however the sandalwood is a smell from the gods, they both have a creamy lather. I have ordered a Taylors Rose shaving cream to try.

Sure doesn't sound like an upgrade to me.

Despite their low price tags, Proraso products are awesome. I love the white soap, both old and new formula. The already mentioned La Toja is another one of my favourites. I also love the soft soaps from Tcheon Fung Sing.

TOBS has a lot of interesting scents, but when I need a guaranteed awesome lather, I pull out Proraso white soap or a La Toja stick. I'm not making that up.

Used to have fun with Commander Yellow Pantyhose
The performance of the new Proraso Sandalwood cream (red tube) is very good, but it's similar (performance wise) to what you're using. If you simply want a different scent, then give it a try. Also, try the regular Proraso (green) if you haven't already done so--I love it!

If you want to try something that performs differently, then try one of the TOBS. Of the two you mentioned, the Avocado will have a similar scent to the Proraso White, and the Jermyn St will be quite different. So, I guess it boils down to this:

Like Proraso, want a different scent: Proraso Red or Green
Like Proraso, want a different product, similar scent: TOBS Avocado
Like Proraso, want diff product & diff scent: TOBS Jermyn St

An "upgrade" from Proraso white tub? Sounds like a very ambitious mission in my humble opinion; but TOBS puts out great products. I use their Shave Shop cream which is quite good.

Cream: TOBS Eton College OR Avocado, both are very moiturising.

Soap: Tabac, Cella or Arko. Easy to Lather and amazing scents! (Especialy the Arko)

GreekGuy, which one do you recommend ? Thanks.

So you want to stay in the $10-20 range, which in terms of the soap itself isn't that hard. The problem is the shipping, seeing as I don't know whats available in AU.

Some inexpensive recommendations would be Dr. Dittmar, Arko, Crabtree and Eveyln, and Cade. The Cade soap is a little finicky, but with practice works great. You can find it at L'Occitane. I imagine you have L'Occitane and Crabtree and Eveyln stores locally, which saves on the shipping. So those are both affordable options. Arko is cheap, like $2 cheap. It definitely performs above its pay grade, but again, shipping can add to that cost, and I prefer the others more

Thank you all for your recommendations ..

I should have mentioned my Proraso white tub is old formula.. Which i am very happy with when i get the lather right .. still working on my technique .. but my cheapo Palmolive nylon synthetic is almost dead now. does not hold water well and lather only last 1 pass.

To the topic,
I read new Proraso formula are even better than old Proraso. no ??

And i always thought three Ts are more like luxury shaving creams hence upgrade from Proraso ..

" Performance wise " which one is better TOBS Avocado or Jermyn St ?? (i have read that Jermyn St. is scent is very good . Subjective of course)

Looking into soaps more .

Thanks.

Avocado is more moisturising and has a scent that i find you either love it or you hate it. Never tried the Jermyn but i've never noticed it as being a
"stand out" cream.

I just bought my first bowl of Proraso shave soap. Very soothing. Also picked up an Arco to try. Not too bad, certainly the right price.

I'm currently using up my bar of Mitchells Lanolin. Seems to be lasting forever. Way longer than anything else I've had.

TOBS Jermyn street is a winner. I personally don't like the Avocado scent as it it cucumber and melon-y...might I suggest Nancy Boy Signature or Nancy Boy Replenshing which is a pure cucumber? The name may not have broad appeal but the cream is top notch! I enjoy my Jermyn st and have the cologne, lotion, balm, etc., but when my Jermyn st is tapped I don't pan to refill. Nancy Boy, on the other and, I will always have. Good luck, you choosing from a line up of winners so you won't go wrong!

I've got the Proraso which I think is very good.
I also have Razorock xxx & GFT's coconut, which is my current favourite. It just seems to have slightly better creamy smoothness & moisturising properties, as well as a nice smell.
I think the GFT Coconut will be my main cream, as well as trying some other Razorock creams for the future. I face lather with a silvertip brush & use the Bluebeards Revenge aftershave balm. No after burn or redness which is great for me, as I have to wear a collar & tie for up to 12 hrs at a time for work.
Matt.
