Just got into de shaving and im so happy i did. my one and only razor is a fatboy and now im interested in a vintage open comb..what does the pack recommend and why?....also i do enjoy the more aggressive shave. i have the fatboy dialed up with a feather.
I would start with a NEW either short comb or long comb. They are moderately aggressive, but will give you a flavor of OC shaving with breaking the bank. If you decide they are too mild, you can resell them pretty easily. If you find one that needs a cleaning, you can save a few bucks.
All Gillette OC I know of are mild shavers, the NEW probably the mildest of them all, so this might not be your first choice.
I only own one of those German vintage OCs, and it is very mild too, but maybe there are some aggressive ones amongst them.
I'd vote for a Gillette New as well. Short comb for milder, long comb for more aggressive, but both are great shavers. I liked both of those more than my 2013 Muhle R41.
Along with several others, I recommend the Gillette NEW LC. Since you like aggressive shavers, you might also try the NEW Deluxe. Or perhaps the Cadet OC (aka Razorock).
It is real simple, the Gillette OLD was the first Double Edge OC. You should start with an OLD and get used to the performance and make it your baseline.
Then begin to move in time with the later razors. You will have the beginning system to server as a reference point for all other OC razors.
My first (and only, thus far) OC is a NEW short-comb. I was nervous about using it initially, but I was rewarded with a great shave. It has sparked my interest in other OC's, like the Little Bastone or an Old Type.
Gulfbravo; I hope you aren't getting tired of this but I'm echoing the Gillette NEW recommendation. They are highly regarded at B&B and there are plenty of threads here for more info. You can't go wrong with either long or short comb; they are splendid razors. Welcome to Badger and Blade! Regards. Mike
Actually as emphatic I am about the new long comb I agree with this... Pick something that when u look at it you get excited... The rest should fall in place
I have a Merkur 15C OC. Unless I am completely wrong (please, somebody correct me if I am wrong), the head should be similar to the Gillette OLD. That is the most mild razor you could ever have. If you like some aggressivity in your razor, don't get an OLD.
That said, 15C (and OLD) are not bad razors. I used mine today after been approximately 60h without shaving. I was in hurry, and because of the mildness I could shave with great speed without risking injury. I really quickly pulled once WTG and once ATG and I had a really good shave.
Gillette New. As others have said, they're pretty easy to get hold of and are pretty much the yardstick by which all OCs are measured. I have an Old and a New, because the New was designed for the same razor blades as we have now it centres the blade better and, I feel, gives a better shave. You won't find many people who've tried a New and didn't like it.
That said, you should really go for whichever one you most fancy.
