Which DE safety razor should I buy?

I want to buy my dad a DE for Xmas but I know nothing about safety razors as I am a straight razor man! :confused1

What i do know is that I don't want a vintage (I'm sure that narrows it down) not too worried about price as long as I'm spending for the right reasons!

All lo helpful suggestions would be gratefully welcomed!

If the price is not an issue, I'd go for the ATT Kronos 5 piece set. It will set you back around $300, but this will give your dad a good amount of options to try and see which one suits him best.

If it's too expensive for you, gor for a Merkur Progress, or even the classic EJ DE89L, which is great for beginners.

I highly recommend the Weber Polished Head with a Classic Handle. It's about $70 and is the best razor I have used. It is just a touch more aggressive than the EJ or Merkur 34c that are popular here, but it is super smooth. I love it.

+ 1. I love the shave of the Weber. It is mild enough for anyone to use, but efficient enough for even the most experienced shaver. It is the best value for a stainless steel razor on the market today.

However if $300 is not out of your budget, the ATT is one of the most well made razors on the planet. The 5 piece set essentially gives your Dad 3 different razors. One that is a mild shaver, one that is a medium or regular shaver and one that is more aggressive, or a heavy shaver. This will allow him to find what suits him best for a daily shaver and will also allow some extra punch if he hasn't shaved for a few days. Conversely, if his skin is feeling sensitive one day, he has the option for a milder shave that day. It's a best of all worlds combination. I would like to own this set one day.

You've gotten great advice. I have the ATT (Above The Tie) Kronos 5 piece set and it is absolutely amazing. The set includes a handle, a cap, and three base plates. Switching the base plates will vary the level of aggressiveness. You can also pick just one of the ATT razors for $185 and add the additional baseplates seperately. If you get just one I'd suggest getting the R plate first. This will then give you other items you can give him for other occasions. ATT has some open comb plates coming out soon as well. This is a lot of money for a razor. If you choose not to spend quite this much the Weber choice is excellent. It's the only all stainless steel razor that you can get in the $70 price range. All other are about double this amount.

I recommend you get him a long handled Progress. It's what I would gift my dad if I think he would shave with DE instead of cartridges.

Guys some great advice, keep the opinions coming aside from anything I'm learning too! The ATT sounds amazing but to be honest from reading the forum and replies because his facial hair is quite thin and he keeps it down a top notch smooth shaver would be the best (although the ATT May be finding its way to my door!:).

so if it was a top notch smooth shaver that gets nice and close (remember he's a beginner too) would it be the long handled progress, weber, ej, merkur 34c? (Does weber only do one type of razor?)

+2. Weber is a great razor for it's price, can't go wrong with it.

If I would have unlimited budget for a razor I would buy an iKon Deluxe open comb. That is a razor I would like to have. It is cheaper than ATT. Read some reviews about it!

Buy the best, forget the rest.

I'm going to go in a different direction and suggest an Edwin Jagger de89 series (barley handle). $30ish, very classy, a good razor for beginners, and lets him get his feet wet.

Plus, I'm highly biased towards vintage razors, and saving money now means more money later for a Gillette New, Tech, or some GEM 1912's. :001_tongu

The Weber would be an excellent choice. If you read the threads they a very well thought of. The EJ and Merkur razors are great starter razors but not nearly the same quality of the Weber. The progress is very nice as well and is a great choice for an adjustible. The plastic knob on the Progress makes it look cheap which would keep me from giving it as a gift. Weber has only one razor available on their site. You do get to choose between the long or short handle versions of this razor.

Been doing a lot of reading on the EJ 89L and seems excellent apart from cheap build quality (pot metal being brittle). Does anyone know anything about the other EJ DE razors on their web site? Do they have the same head as the 89 but a better build quality?
