What's new

Where to start?

So I haven’t ever really been a fragrance kind of guy, but I’m starting to think I would like to put my toe in the water so to speak. I started DE shaving recently and that has provoked my curiosity. I have absolutely no clue where to start or how to go about finding what I like without spending a fortune. I only know that my dad used Canoe and English Leather. I know that the scent changes as it interacts with your skin so I don’t see going into a department store and smelling all the bottles as a viable option.

Can you give this new guy a few pointers?

If you dont feel like going to the store to try them out, then just buy samples online.
Let us know what type of fragrances you like and we can recommend you some good ones to try.

Lots of guys here with very good knowledge of fragrances.

Are you talking AS or EDTs? What I and many others have done- primarily for EDTs- is buy 1ml samples(or thereabouts) from various online sources including several guys on here. In my year or so of becoming a "frag head" I have tried over 500 EDTs. I made the BIG mistake upon starting of buying cheaper full bottles that it turns out I didn't like. Lotsa cheap unliked full bottles add up. And trying to sell them off is difficult if not impossible. So, best advice from someone who learned the hard way- buy lots and lots of samples! For eg- out of 500 plus tried, I have under 10% that are keepers. Good luck- it's often nerve wracking because unlike many things you really can only try one or two or MAYBE three different frags in a day.

I would buy the small samples from decantshop, luckyscent or another place and start trying stuff. Just did that recently. I was initially convinced I wanted something like Tobacco Vanille, but after trying nearly 2 dozen frags I ended up loving Green Irish Tweed. It was a lot of fun trying the different scents although I think my wife was getting annoyed by about the 10th scent.
