Where to buy Neatsfoot Oil?

I was advised to condition my new strop with Neatsfoot Oil before use. With that being said I'd like to try my first straight shave this weekend. If I have to order online and wait for shipping I'll probably have to wait longer. So my question is does anyone know of any stores where Neatsfoot Oil can be purchased?

Can't say much on where to get it but curious why you would want it for a new strop? I guess depending on who's strop you have you would probably need it but most artisans strops come treated.

I purchased this strop at Gentlemen's Best. Ray recommended I treat it with neatsfoot oil. I trust his opinion so that's what I'm going to do.

Hi. I am not a stropping expert, but I am quite good with leather as I do a lot of western leather carving and have gone so far as to make sandals, moccasins, and even rudimentary shoes.

Neatfoot oil will soften and condition leather and provide a reasonable barrier against moisture. It is used to condition saddles and other leather items for outdoor applications, as well as to condition the leather before applying oil based finishes. If your strop is vegetable tanned leather, the tanning process makes the leather very dry. Conditioning it is an excellent idea. I condition my finished carved items like wallets and belts every so often. And, before I do the initial finish.

The oil will soak in and fill the pores of the leather softening the surface and protecting it. As to the stropping, it will likely make the strop more "gentle" on the blade because it is a bit softer. It will make your strop last longer, as veg-tanned leather has a tendency to dry out and crack over time.

By the way veg-tanned leather has that classic light tan color. I have read that some strops are made of latigo which already has some surface finish added. However, from my experience with latigo dog collars they can also use a bit of oil every so often.

I hope this helps.

I realize this is a very old post. For the benefit of anyone else that may stumble across it, I thought I'd mention that in Canada, Home Hardware carries Neatsfoot oil... $5 for a 250 ml bottle.

IS there any reason why mineral, or baby oil would not work? I was told that just rubbing the strop with your hands transfers the natural oil from your skin to the leather. This is what I do.

I found mine at a rodeo store that sold goods for equestrian activities. Its cheap and you get a lot.

I would think that baby oil may be too "oily".

I have heard that LIGHT mineral oil will work ok. But that's different that "normal" mineral oil.

what about extra virgin olive oil? Would that work?
