Where do you buy your ties?

I wear a suit and tie to work every day. It is time to update my tie collection, and I'm seeking advice. I used to buy most of my ties at Brooks Brothers, but I have found the BB ties I have purchased in the last few years fray too easily.

I think that most ties are over priced. I don't like to spend more than $40 on a tie. I have had some good luck at the Nordstrom Rack, but it's pretty hit or miss.

So, do you have any suggestions on where to buy 100% silk ties in the sub $40 range? I hate shopping, so on-line suggestions would be great!

i'm pretty cheap with ties so I generally buy them on clearance at Macy's, Nordstrom Rack or the thrift store. i've also ordered tie lots on ebay before. paulfrederick.com has some nice looking ties that are under $40 when in clearance.

I probably bought too many last time Ben Silver had a sale and the Polo store sent a discount coupon. Still I probably spent too much and many have never been worn or only several times from six months ago since I wear a tie maybe twice a month now.

I was just checking out www.thetiebar.com. I ordered a few ties at $15 each. I'll let you know what I think once I receive them.

I have found that cost has little bearing on the quality of a tie (with some exceptions, of course). I picked up some of my favorite ties at Ross for $10. I have also purchased or been gifted expensive ties that did not stand the test of time. My pet peeve is when a tie starts to fray after only a few wearings. I hope thetiebar works out, as $15 per tie is a great price.

In the same vein as Steinmart, we have Marshall's in central OH. Many name brand overstock ties available, usually under $10.

I buy all my ties from Marshall's or TJ Max. Can be hit or miss but there are enough stores near by that I can hit 3-4 stores in an afternoon.

I buy ties from the following retailers:

-Brooks Brothers
-Joseph A Bank
-TJ Max.

TJ Max represents the best value, and they have a good selection of 100% silk ties, and they are way under $40. Also, Jos A Bank has 50% off sales a few times a year, this brings their ties under $40. I, like you find the BB ties to be low quality and overpriced, but I do pick them up when they have a sale.

I find the Jos A Bank ties to be top quality, they are much better than anything Brooks Brothers is currently offering.

I go the opposite direction with ties, while I don't wear a suit every day I prefer to spend the money on something unique as in woven as opposed to printed and there's no going back after wearing a seven fold tie. I tend to spend $100+ and get ten years out of them.

Marshall's Ugly Tie Rack (clearance) is a good place to shop.

I confess, that when I am in Manhattan, or some Flea Markets, I will take advantage of their 3-4 for $10 silk tie deals. If I get food stains on them I don't care.

I rarely have to wear one, so I'll find them on clearance or at an overstock place like TJ Maxx or Marshall's. I was in Burberry this weekend in Chicago and noticed a tie for $250. My jaw hit the table the ties were on.

If I had seen those, they would have been running for the defibrillator!:lol:

I have the same problem. Also, they are using a liner that is thick making a too fat knot.

Have you tried a different knot? Half-windsor or 4-in-hand are a bit thinner and might work. I prefer a 4-in-hand with a button down collar, windsors are too bulky. The knot is less formal, like the button down.

Ross, TJ Maxx, or Kohls. I've found clearance ties at Kohls for $2, and they're not cheap quality. Ross and TJ Maxx usually have department store brands between $10-$15
