When was the Progress first produced?

Being that the first adjustable gillette models came out in the late 50's, I was wondering if Merkur came out with the Progress in the same time period?

I am fairly sure Gillette was not the first to make adjustables. I think Apollo was earlier, and might have been first. At http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/249282-What-s-the-first-adjustable-safety-razor a gent writes that it came to market in 1949.

The Progress appeared in the 1956 Merkur catalog, but I think it had already been around for a few years by then. The catalog text suggests that, anyway.
