When stropping.

Does the spine of the razor actually stay in contact with the strop the whole time? Is that what sets the uniform angles?

In other word does the spine and the edge stay on the stop at the same time?

thanks!

yes. And don't lift the blade off the strop spine first, like a plane taking off. Go slow, stop when you get to the end of the strop, rotate the blade on the spine and repeat in the opposite direction. Check out YouTube.

Here's a nice little video from GeoFatboy on the tube. You can spool forward to 2.20 where he really gets into stropping technique. The video has a nice clear demo of holding the razor, rotating on the spine and using a light touch together with an X-stroke on the stop, which you need to work into your technique if the strop is narrow.

Good illustration in this one and a smooth technique.

Yeah, my technique was off.... I also find that laying my strop on the table is effective for learning technique. thanks gents!

Jeff, the spine and the edge stay on the strop. The only time the edge is lifted from the strop is on the flip returns.

Don't do what he did on his very first sample pass: forget to flip the razor before coming back. I'm surprised he didn't reshoot that--it's a good way to "win" a new strop.
