When did they start using plastic bottles for Old Spice?

It's been a while since I've gone shopping for a new bottle of Old Spice but seriously *** happened? I pick up the box and realize, "Man...this seems awful light?". When I open it to my surprise there is a Old Spice shaped plastic bottle in there . WHY?! Why would they do this?! Granted, the nature of the AS isn't any different, but the bottle is iconic.

To solve this problem I had to rifle through some older wears in my bathroom to find a good ole fashion ceramic bottle of Old Spice. Luckily it was mostly full. Guess I'll just have to refill it after I empty it .

Just bought my first bottle of Old Spice this past weekend. That was in a glass/ceramic bottle (made in the UK).

From what I understand, P & G did change the formula to allow for the use of plastic bottles, which I think is cheaper for distribution purposes.

Old Spice has a different fragrance now as well. There's a lot of heartburn around here because of that.

Yes, the scent is definately different. The Shulton (India) stuff smells pretty close, but without any of the old formula left, it's all comparison by memory. But the Shulton stuff reminds me of my dad whereas the P&G stuff is close but not quite the same, but i like it none the less. Haven't tried the V-Jonn (sp?) stuff yet but I hear good things bout that too. Maybe ClubmanRob will drop in on this one & give us the rundown. (again)

Wow, I didn't realize that there was such a difference in the formulations. If I'm sitting on some good old vintage Spice, guess I'll have to use it more sparingly. That's a damn shame, since I just rediscovered it.

I still have a bottle of the good old Shulton left over from my in law, and took an opportunity to whiff it and i must say though the india version is pretty close, but it ain't there either. The original Shulton smells almost sweet ( I cannot promise there was no funky chemical degradation over the years , but heck no expiry, and still uses it occassionally )

I love the PnG and the Indian version anyways. So no issues.

But the smaller red plasticky bottle was a little letdown in packaging. The glass one is still being sold as well

You've got it right. All of the scents are different, and it all depends on what you like. I just hate that P&G doesn't give us any option to enjoy original Old Spice. The closest current production option we have is the India Shulton, followed by the V-Jonn generic. I mean, how hard would it be to come out with a limited edition glass bottle of the Shulton formula every Christmas or two?

Speaking of Christmas sets, Old Spice has occasionally been in plastic here and there throughout the years, though it wasn't in any reformulated blend like it was in the P&G years. Shulton occasionally put out those mini bottles made out of plastic for some of their gift sets, and since the bottles weren't meant for long term use, they didn't try to re-do the blend to prevent leeching. Most of these out there now didn't age too well, and should be avoided if you're actually wanting to use what's inside.

I'm sorry but what is the problem with plastic bottles? Is it just nostalgia? I'd rather have the cheapest packaging in a product I like to use. Unless of course they do not pass on the savings to the consumer. Then they are just heartless and greedy :tongue_sm.

I guess, being a child born in the 80's, I am use to plastic containers being all around. I hate picking up shards of glass when it breaks. Then vacuum the remainder up. And find myself stepping on some tiny shard of glass that survived months and months later in an area away from the scene of the accident that boggles the mind.

Maybe i just never smelt the old version and I don't know what I'm missing. Ah... ignorance is bliss.

The problem, aside from the obvious reformulations that have to take place, is that a plastic bottle scent just isn't going to last very long compared to a glass bottle scent. What are people going to be buying on Ebay thirty years from now? Grandpa's plastic bottle of Old Spice that smells like old plasticy water?

Did I mention plastic is just tacky?

This .02 brought to you from a fellow child of the eighties. Believe it or not, I still remember glass bottle 2 liters of RC and Cheerwine.

Our old 5 pound Sony walkmans... and Grey Brick, green and black screen gameboys.

No wait... no they won't!

I say poprocks is where the Ebay market will goto. Vintage, never opened, pop rocks.

Another child of the 80's myself, and I agree with that completely. I was most disappointed because now the product just felt cheap and fake.

Realizing now, that as it's in plastic it won't last nearly as long makes things even worse. Perhaps went my ceramic bottle runs dry, I can just buy a new plastic one and refill it.
