What to do?

I picked up this brush for $25 at a local antique store. The handle is very elegant Waterford crystal. The brush leaves much to be desired, it is a low grade, guessing pure badger. I want to give this to my dad for a gift and want the best for him. Would you recommend I upgrade it to a silvertip? Or just leave it be? Would a renovation devalue the price?

Thats a sweet brush man! Excellent find. You might be able to drill out the bristles and restore it. Sounds complicated to me though coming from someone who's never done that type of thing before! But if your interested I know there are some threads on doing that type of thing floating around here somewhere....beautiful handle though!

Oh, and PS -- I was thinking about trying to find my dad a 1952 vintage Gillette "X" razor for Father's Day. Thats his birth year.

If you intend for him to use it, I wouldn't worry about devaluing it. I don't believe it is an unusually valuable collector's item such that you wouldn't want to disturb it's original integrity. Re-knot it!

BTW, are the grade-A's worth the extra money?

Yes, buy the best TGN knot you can afford.

I've found the 2-band finest to be probably the best value. I think many would agree.

I have the finest and the Grade A...I absolutely love my Grade A 20mm TGN knot...strangely enough...I seem to have said that at least 3 times today already!
