What Socks?

I got a pretty good deal on the RW moc-toe chukkas pictured in the link below so I decided to give them a shot. They will serve double duty (1) under jeans, and (2) under chinos for work when I'm forced to trek through winter slop here in CT.

I think they will fit well under both but I'm having a little trouble trying to figure out what will fit well under them (ie. socks). As it stands, I'm leaning towards crew socks but I'm hoping some of you will be able to help determine if that's really the best option. Thanks!!

thanks for the rec

Safe to assume you're thinking the mid calf crew sock is the best way to go too then?

I used Smartwool socks for years when I could get them on sale. Sometimes I could find deals where they were under $10 a pair. They served me well and I got numerous seasons from each pair before I threw tem out. The last few years I have resorted to buying (Costco) Kirkland Merino wool hiking socks. They sell 4 pairs for $12.00. They are very similar to Smartwool socks. They may have a little less padding but pretty close and they last numerous seasons. I think they are a steal. I won't go back to Smartwool as long as they are still available.

How think are the smartwool socks?

These are fitting pretty snug (width) so I can't wear anything too bulky

Smartwool makes various weight merino wool socks light, medium, heavy. Hiking socks are generally padded. The best way to determine which sock is good for you is to find a retail store and check them out. Maybe you can determine which weight is right from Amazon reviews.

Link for light weight hiking sock with reviews.

TJ's/Marshall's have a pretty good selection of wool socks from various manufacturers at times. It can be hit or miss but I have had good luck at times. Sierra trading post is another source. Prices are generally 50% or less what retail stores charge.

Thanks
I see a trip to my local Marshalls in my future :wink2:

Its a crap shoot with Marshalls. Every store is different but they usually have a decent selection. One time I saw Smartwool...but never again. I recently bought some Woolrich and Cabot boot socks that have been pretty decent.

If you have a Dicks sporting goods near you they carry Smartwool...that way you can try them on.

Also checkout Costco if you have a membership. The Kirkland Merino wool socks are good also bought some Wigwam Merino wool socks for a good price there.

My Marshalls is pretty good actually. It's pobably the best one in a 20 mile radius. If they fall short though, I'll swing through Dick's and see what they have.

Thanks again

If those sources fall thru you can try REI, they carry all the major brands of quality wool socks. Sometimes you can get a good deal in the outlet section online.
