What's new

What razor do I need next?

I'm interested in getting a new razor. I have a Merkur 34c, a Gillette Tech F-1, and a Champagne Gillette Lady. What do I need next? I had a back handled flare tip, but it's a bit too light for my tastes.

I'm thinking of a Super Speed Blue Tip, a Merkur 38c, or some type of open comb. Any thoughts?

Yeah I'm keen on finding a Fatboy or Aristocrat, but how expensive. GoldenMonkey is selling a beautiful Aristocrat on here now. What is too much to pay for one of these?

I've never heard of the GEM Damaskeene, thanks for the tip.

Whoa! Slow down. Those are all good, but harder to find razors. I would suggest to try a Gillette NEW from the 1930's. They can be had for much less than the others mentioned and are possibly the best of all the Gillette designs for shave quality compared to price.

I think a NEW is one of those must-try designs; however, open combs do not seem to offer the best shave for most (including myself).

How about one of the EJ/Mühle DE89 models? I've gotten wonderful shaves from a DE89L and I think the prices are very fair.

If you think the black handled super speed is too light for you, you will probably find the same to be true about the blue tip. It's a very lightweight razor.

News are good. The bar handled news tend to be head heavy, while the ball end news throw a little more weight into the handle end. Personally, I feel that the news have one of the best looking head designs in a 3 piece, and look even better after they've lost their plating, and you get that 2 toned copper + brass look (polished, of course).

I think it's time for you to get an adjustable now. Merkur Futur or Progress, Gillette Fat Boy or slim adjustable would be my recommendations.

I'd get a Bostonian / New Standard. A great piece of history and a wonderful razor. Combined with a good blade like a Feather or Super Iridium, it's hard to believe that something from the early 1920's can shave so well. I'm also a big fan of Aristocrats. If you're not fussed about abit of wear on the finish and no box, you can pick up an Aristocrat on eBay for between $20 and $25.

Thanks for the heads up. Can the same be said for other Super Speeds like the flare tip, the read tip, or the ones from the forties?
