What's new

What razor did I just buy?

Sorry but it does not look good to me. (I do not recommend shaving with anything carrying rust on it due to the danger of tetanus..)

The rust (from an old blade) is easily removed. The razor itself can't rust. Should clean up nicely and be a great shaver.

Im not planning on shaving with it.....i am going to do a boil....alchohol dip.....baking soda..aluminum foil trick to get the tarnish off. I still have no clue what razor that is.....any help?

With a bit of time and effort and elbow grease that'll clean up really well.

See the before/after cleaning thread somewhere to see what can be done .

Nice pickup .

I may give it a whirl....but right now my perfect setup is a new deluxe or a new improved. Im trying to collect some of the oldies...but I still am not sure if im gettin what I think I bought.....I think you might be right on the single ring after looking at a few.

That is definitely a single ring. Nice find! That just went up not too long ago, I think. And when it first went up, there wasn't a BIN option.

Don't boil it . . . you can soak it for a bit in hot soapy water, then scrub with a toothbrush and Scrubbing Bubbles. Follow that up with the baking soda and aluminum foil trick.

Boiling isn't needed, and only subjects the handle to more heat than it needs and can exacerbate the crack that it probably already has.

It will clean up nicely and should earn a treasured place in your rotation! Enjoy!! :thumbup1:

Based on the serial #, I'd say it's a 1914 Single Ring Old Type Gillette. Check out the Wiki http://http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/index.php/US_Gillette_Dating_Information

Great score on a great piece of History!

You can buy a bottle of TarnX for a few bucks. Follow the directions.
It works every bit as good or better than the tinfoil trick with no boiling water to deal with.

This is a great razor and you should indeed shave with it after you clean it up.

Thanks fellas for the info.....I think i may grab some tarnex. I have ruined a couple of gold razors by using the wrong products so I dont want to do that with this.

If rust mixes up with blood in veins than I think it would cause tetanus. But since he knows how to clean the rust it should be all right.

Nah, tetanus is just a bacterial infection (Clostridium Tetani). Rust itself won't do anything, its just that rusty things are often left out in the elements and it provides a great rough surface for bacteria to grow on. Just clean it up and you're good to go :001_smile
