What is the purpose of Aftershave?

There are not stupid questions, only questions not asked. LOL

I have read that it is to moisturize the face, and soothe the skin

So I don't get why one would use aftershave splash. That seems like it would irritate the skin and dry it out due to the alcohol.

So can someone edumacate me on aftershave splash.

I love the smell of aftershave splashes but am at a loss to why they are used. I would think it would be more beneficial to use a moisturizer with natural soothing properties

Astringent, antiseptic, moisturizer, and a nice smell--all in one little splash.

What John said.

Here is what he left off. If you DON'T use an aftershave here is what will happen:

None of the ladies will ever notice you

You may come down with chronic ailments

It will become evident that you are aging at a faster pace

Your relatives will begin mentioning the advantages of a retirement home

You will no longer get a raise at work

I can go on but please, use an aftershave - any aftershave for your own sake!

The traditional purpose of an alcohol splash is to disinfect the small cuts and bruises caused by shaving.

+1, but I will also add that the alcohol can close up small nicks without leaving that small red dot that says you got an ouchie.

The Captain is dead-on: if you don't use a manly aftershave, your life will start to deteriorate before your very eyes: the ladies will turn their noses up in disgust, your boss will assume you to be a miserable failure, your family will whisper in hushed tones about your general malaise, and you will be shunned as a pariah. I could go on, but why risk it?!

If you are worried about the alcohol in splashes, here's what I use: a 50/50 mixture of 100% pure aloe juice, and witch hazel. Mix it well, by which I mean put it in an empty and DRY water bottle and shake it like a polaroid picture. Add some glycerin to taste, and then add a drop or two of your favorite essential or fragrance oil. Whenever I can't decide what aftershave to use, I reach for this stuff.

Alcohol would only be a problem if you were using pure alcohol. Aftershaves have all sorts of other ingredients that promote skin health and more than compensate for the alcohol.

One more agreement with Mr. Snidely.

Two primary purposes: Antiseptic, so you don't get infected from nicks and cuts, some of which may be so small you didn't even know they happened, and astringent, to help close said nicks and cuts.
Also secondary and a tertiary purposes, in no particular order: Scent and moisturizing.

Choose your aftershave carefully and use it liberally. :velva2:
