What's new

What is my next brush?

So I'm looking to get my next brush for Christmas this year, and need some advice on what is next. I started out with a VDH Boar for a few months, and have been using a Tweezerman since last Christmas.
I'm not looking for a super expensive brush though, so it seems the best choice would be the C&E Best Badger, but I can't seem to find one. The C&E webpage only list the Edwin Jagger travel brushes, and amazon and ebay searches give me nothing. Is it discontinued? Or is the Edwin Jagger Best Badger the same brush?
If not the C&E, what is my next brush?

$69.95 and an extra 10% till December 15th

That is if you like small hand made brushes, theres others here.

I'm a bowl latherer exclusively. As for soap vs. cream, I do a little of both. I've only tried a few different products, and am looking to branch out in both directions (soap and cream) if possible. Price range-- the Edwin Jagger seems like a fantastic bargain, but I could go higher, but probably not way more than $50 or $60.

Is a boar brush better for soaps? I was under the impression that boar brushes were generally of lower quality or at least "not as good" as badger when holding water, generating lather, etc. Are there higher quality boar brushes out there?

Personal preference and they're by no means lower quality...

In skilled hands, any brush can be made to lather just about anything actually.

If you really want that EJ buy it, however you can do a lot better for a lot less money...

One last brush with what you said.

22mmx54mm finest badger will work well with soaps and creams, and is sized for bowl lathering.

Boar-hair is not needed. Get a fine pure-badger-brush. It´s good quality and hard enough to work well with the soap.

For example:

Did you just link an AoS brush???

I think you did...

If you´re using shaving soap, bestbadger/silvertip is not very effective! With shaving cream its ok.

This is, and I mean no disrespect, crazy talk. All I use is soap. My Rooney 1/1 Super Silvertip, Custom Shavemac Finest and D01 (both are silvertip grades) all positively murder soaps. My Edwin Jagger Pure is much less effective. My silvertip brushes are more dense and have short lofts (<50mm). Brush construction (loft and brush density) has way more to do with how well a brush chews up soap than hair grade does.

To the OP: I would highly recommend a Shavemac in Finest (west coast shaving), as long as it's loft is 50mm or less. There's also a way to get a Rooney 1/1 in Super Silvertip for around $63 shipped. Just call T&H, tell them you want to order this brush, and tell them you're a Badger and Blade member. That should get you a discount and free shipping. You have to call it in, though.

p.s. - A penworks or penchetta brush seems like a wonderful value, as well. You can get one in the same price range as a C&E BBB. You'd be happier with a penworks.

If you are looking to save as much money as possible, get a DeLong silvertip from ebay for around $20. They are a lot softer than the Tweezerman, and a great value to boot.

This is simply not correct. There are some floppy badger brushes that might not be best for soap, but this is far too much of a generalization to be true -- the Rooney and Simpsons super silvertips, among others, are fantastic soap brushes.

The penworks and the shavemac are both tempting... I'll have to do a little shopping around and make some comparisons.

Thanks for the advice!

The DeLong is a nice, soft brush, but I found it a little floppy when I used it. It is the least expensive silvertip you're going to find, however.
