After reading the sticky in this section I've decided that i want to purchasae a Edwin Jagger Best Badger brush. Now I was looking at traditionalshaving and their starter kits. They seem to include a black badger brush. Where do they fall in the range that was reviewed in the sticky? Are they like a pure brush or best?

Black badger would be comparable to pure badger. I believe it is taken from the back of the badger.
I prefer it to look at, but don't know if there's much difference in the shave. Sometimes grey badgerhair looks a bit....um....adult.
Black badger is less expensive grade comparable to pure. It usually clipped to shape after the knot is made so the tips are sharp but the shafts are quite flexible. The result is a fairly prickly brush that looks quite striking IMO.

Sorry guys - I should have replied to this long ago but I didn't spot the thread. I'll leave some comments for if anyone comes across this in the future.
Black badger is very similar in quality to best badger (as in it is pretty much the same). The biggest difference is visually but also the brushes tend to have a slightly higher loft than the best badger brushes. I wouldn't worry about them being prickly - I've used them myself without noticing this and I haven't had any comments from customers along those lines.
Basically they are a good quality brush but are an entry-level badger brush. This is the reason they are included in the starter kit as they are ideal for newbies getting started on a budget.
