What is a good, inexpensive wine at most stores?

Was going to buy a decent wine to go with some steak tonight for a romantic surprise dinner with the lady.

I will be at Kroger or Whole foods, prefer a red wine.

What should I look for?

We generally like sweet wines, not dry...

My choice would be Cabernet Sauvignon or maybe a Syrah.

I know it's a little late, but personally I'd go for a nice Beaujolais. It doesn't have to be expensive. Perhaps next time?

Grab a Cabernet Sauvignon...that would pair well with the steak. A lot of grocery stores have placards that show a wines rating(or classify it as a best buy). While its just an opinion from some magazine Ill often pick the best buy rated ones. I've found you dont have to spend alot go get a decent bottle of wine.

I purchased a Beringer Cab for $7.99 yesterday and its quite good. Good chance they will have that at your local shop.

I went with a local favorite out of North Carolina, by Duplin called Hatteras Red, it is from muscadine grapes, real good, sweet.
