What do the little numbers signify?

This has been puzzling me for a while, and apparently my Google skills aren't up to extracting an answer from the ether. All of my razor blades have little numbers stamped on them: 1 and 2 on one side, and 3 and 4 on the other. What are these numbers meant to convey?

My first thought was that they want me to shave with the 1-2 side first, then flip the blade and shave with the 3-4 side. But that doesn't make sense, since the edge is shared, and would be blunted no matter which way it's turned. Then I noticed that there's a number 4 on the inside of my razor. Are the two related somehow?

This may be a newbie question with an obvious answer, but then, I'm still a newbie, and it's puzzling the heck out of me.

To the end user, the numbers have no significance or purpose. However, best guess is that they have something to do with quality control procedures for the manufacturer.

There is some speculation, that when properly decoded, the exact date and time of the shavepocalypse will be revealed by the blade numbers. However, that is largely speculation and no one around here seems able to read ancient Mayan.

Interesting... thanks. I hadn't considered that possibility (the internal use, not the shavepocalypse), since blades from several brands are marked the same way. Thanks for clearing that up!

I have it on pretty good authority (an e-mail received by a member from Gillette) that they are quality control identification numbers.

That or the combination to my luggage.

If you get one with a 5 on it, you can send it in to the manufacturer for a free 10-pack of blades. I haven't found one yet, but I can just feel it's going to be any day now. Good luck! :wink2:

I thought they were moon phases!?

No, it's the lyrics for a song sung by Feist. Don't you remember that iPod commercial? Sheesh!

1,2,3,4, tell me that you love me more
Sleepless long nights
That is what my youth was for

C'mon you know the rest!

Sounds like the combination an idiot would have on his luggage! :)

Now I feel left out, my blades have no little numbers, most of them have little lines on them though. I guess I should start buying more expensive blades.

Just take a fine tip Sharpie and write them on the blades yourself, that's what I do. And be creative, don't just limit yourself to the boring 1,2,3,4.
