What do i need?

I am a beginner and am unsure of what i actually need. i see a lot of expensive brushes out there. do i really need one or can i just get a $9 boar brush from WCS? keep in mind i am a college student, and i have no preferences yet since i have yet to shave. i am not even sure if i would rather soaps or creams yet.... any help is very much appreciated.

Need? The $9 boar brush will work fine. I've got a couple badger brushes and a cheapo boar brush I picked up at the drugstore. I use the cheapo boar sometimes and just ordered a better boar to see what it's like. You can whip up a fine lather with that $9 boar brush.

What do you want? That's a much different question :)

I'd say, start with the $9 boar and see if you like it. If not, you're only out $9.

$9 boar brush is all you need. break it in with some William's and you're set!:thumbup1:

Grab a 7.50 dollar kit from walmart with a lather bowl, a puck of VDH and a brush, and you are set.
If you want to upgrade on the cheap, get a Tweezerman Badger Brush from Amazon for 15 bucks, and you can relegate the brushes you move up from to your travel kit.
This hobby CAN be expensive, but it doesn't HAVE to be.
Good Luck.

+1 to starting off cheap. I've been DE shaving for over a year now and have a variety of all other hardware, but I still can't get away from my $13 Tweezerman off Amazon. Maybe one day I'll get an "upgrade," but I think it's proof that a brush is only good if it does exactly what you need it to no matter how much it cost.

cool thanks guys.

and a special thanks to luvmysuper for telling me where to get a starter kit.

thanks alot for all the help.

I also recommend the Tweezerman brush. It's a solid reliable performer that doesn't require a lot of break in.

I started with a nylon brush that cost about $3 and lasted about 2 months. Than I purchased a knot from Golden Nib that replaced the nylon knot and gave me a cheap but great performing brush. If you don't care for pretty handles and don't mind Brand names than this is an economic way to get/make good brushes.
