What Did I Do Wrong.

So I got the SE Assimilation Tour package and tried it out this morning. I slid a Gem blade into the the lid of the Gem razor, closed it, and took a first pass. It was also my last pass, since it cut my face to shreds. I must have a dozen cuts and slices. Now I'm good enough with a DE that I can't remember the last time I had even a nick, so what did i do wrong?

As a first thought, maybe the blade was not locked in behind the blade stops. Another thing that is different from a DE is the blade angle. It should only be about 10 degrees from your face. You can start with the razor head flat against your face and increase the angle from there.

Definitely make sure the blade is secured behind the blade stops. I've had a SE or two that didn't have the blade secured and they cut me up badly.

Been there, done that early on in the game. Blade stops. If the blade is sitting on top of the stops, what you got there is a deli slicer.

+1
There is a thread on this site where I talk about an OCMM that had worn down blade stops. It cut me worse than anything I have ever shaved with, (and I have used a straight razor a few times.)

Thanks, guys. Yup, that was definitely it. I've now secured the blade properly, and I'll give it another shot tomorrow (on the parts of my face that are still intact), if I'm not too traumatized :wink2:. Are there any other tips that a DE shaver should know before putting SE blade to face?

Phew, I thought you were the first casualty!

Keep the flat of the head almost against your face.
Keep it light.
Listen for the screams of each hair being cut down. Not as much aural feedback on a Gbar as there is on a 1912, but still more than a DE. Hear it purr....

The first way has the blade behind the stops. Don't try #2.

Hopefully the blade is a shaving blade and not a hardware store (duller) blade not designed for shaving.

Starting out, I'd keep the cap on your face. As you get used to it, then you can try a bit of an angle.

For under the nose, I have found that I get the best shaves by pulling your nose sideways, placing the blade right under the nostril, and rolling the edge down until the cap ends up almost on my face as I shave from north-south and midline-to the side a bit. Other people pull their nose up, shave under the nose sideways (I do that as a touchup for pass 2 a tiny bit), or use a DE or Injector or cartridge for that area. Or grow a moustache.

GEM Juniors and Damaskeenes are nice. I prefer the Junior because I love the ornate handle aesthetics, and it shaves about the same for me. I am relatively inexperienced with my 1912 (or any SE/DE for that matter), being only 7 months in.
