Until I get a feel for a new razor I always use Derbys for at least the first two shaves. Derbys are more forgiving if my angle is off or I apply too much pressure. I have the chatsworth version with the 89 head and it's so smooth I got a little overconfident and nicked my chin and irritated a patch on my neck on the first shave. On my second shave it gave me BBS using a Derby and I wasn't trying for that close a shave. I usually just go for CCS. It's one close shaver.
have tried a bunch, red IP's, yellow 7 o'clocks, super iridiums, etc.
so far, my favorite combo is the astra platinum...which i find to be an excellent balance of sharpness and smoothness. they're also inexpensive which is great.
i've yet to try a blade in my 89 that i thought was poorly suited for it. i've gotten very nice results with a number of different blades.
I'll give the Derby's a try since I've got a bunch of them (a set came w/the razor, and another B&B'er gave me some w/a purchase too)
Then I think I'll grab some Iridiums and Astras... plus I think a blade sampler is in order
I've been languishing with local blades for too long and it's amazing how twitchy some razor and blade combos can be depending on the head design. Derby's seem to work well in my slim adjustable but not as well in the fatboy, but of course it's really the combo of my face/blade/razor.
Can't wait to shave with this implement - it's one really nice bit of kit!
Hmmm I've used quite a few different ones. To be honest, I just couldn't get on with Derbys. But Wilky Swords (English made) and Red Pack IPs seem to work great. I have a whole batch of Red Pack IPs and that's what I'm currently using.
Thank you for the responses! The slim margin seems to be towards the Iridium Supers, Feathers, and red pack IP's with the other suggestions also doing well, like the Astrad.
I'm not convinced that the Derby's are the best combo for my face, so I'll be mixing it up a bit with these others.
