What's new

What are the opinions on the ProGlide?

Well, there's the Old Type, the New Improved, the NEW, Tech, Super Speed, and adjustable TTOs. Or there are the Merkurs or the Edwin Jagger / Muehle 89 derivatives. Or maybe an injector, an SE, or a straight?

The ProGlide has been discussed here too.

I have not used the Proglide, but disappointment with the original Gillette Fusion is what drove lots of men to start looking for better (and cheaper) solutions, and they thus found this board.

There are boatloads of better solutions: The Gillette Trac II, Gillette Atra, Schick Hydro 3, and of course the classic Double Edge Safety Razor.

Most of the traffic on this board is discussion of Double Edge Razors, which are made of solid steel, and designed to last a lifetime, unlike the cheap plastic garbage razors being promoted today. The Double Edge razor also provides for a far superior shave over just about any modern shaving contraptions once you learn the proper technique for using it.

Replacement blades for a Double Edge razor can be had for .10 cents each, and are good for 3-4 shaves on average. Way more economical than the nearly $4 per cartridge price of the Pro-Glide.

The Walmart by me had 6 packs of Proglide cartridges for $25.54, so $4.25 per cartridge. I used the free Proglide that Gillette sent me as part of their Proglide challenge promotion and I have to say other than perhaps an exceptionally low quality disposable pretty much any other razor money can buy is going to be superior by any objective you use to judge it (price, price per shave, quality of shave, etc.)

The ProGlide is great when it is free and not to bad for a final pass on neck and chin..used this way the free blades will last a year or so. then get the new model sample with 6 or 8 blades which will be the next " improvement "

I was going to pick one up just for the hell of it, but handling one at the store reminded me entirely of the Fusion which I find marginal, at best. It's better than a cheap disposable, but that's about it.

If you're curious, pick up a DE razor. They shave remarkably close, you'll save plenty of money on new blades and any razor irritation you have will disappear. It might sound too good to be true, but everyone here has experienced it.

I got a freebie, first shave was decent, almost a BBS but with a lot of irritation, second shave the cartridge itself fell apart on my face and gave me a gash on my neck. I immediately threw it away after that.

Ha, I had to google it. (this may be a sign I have hoarded too many blades)

Since I like thick stiff injector blades, the new thin blade concept is not going to work for me.

Too many blades = too much irritation and razor burn. Heck I switched to wet shaving with DE's and SE's because my Mach3 was giving me loads of ingrown hairs and razor burn, I never looked back.
Is there anything better? Yes, it's called a GEM 1912....best shave possible in my opinion.:001_tt2:

But just think guys. If you manage to cut yourself instead of one small nick you get cut by 5 blades! making a small nick into a good sice gash. I speak from experience before i discovered the wonderful world of DE Razors.

IMHO, most cartridges shave shave just as good as a DE. I have been shaving with a Sensor Excel of late and am getting just as good shaves as a DE. I think DE shaving taught me prep and technique. Combine a cartridge with those skills and you're laughing...it's very easy.

Cartridge versus DE is a a Ford versus Chevy thing. There is no winner...except for Gillette...those greedy monopolistic b*stards. :lol1: j/k

I agree to a certain extent. Although I don't think most new age cartridge razors are very good, I agree that it would take a whole lot to convince me that a DE can deliver better shaves than a Trac II, Atra and Sensor with proper prep. :001_smile
