West Coast Shaving Shipping-BOO!

I find West Coast Shaving (now on East Coast) shipping prices offensive! The Razor Company, Pasteur Pharmacy and Maggard has free shipping after $35, $50, $59. I am crying and shaking as I type this (well maybe not but still annoying!)

Let’s just say that West Coast Shaving has had their share of negative comments.
If a vendor upsets me, I move on to another vendor.

I always include shipping costs into my calculation, to the point that I have been known to add some shaving soap or cream, or even a single pack of razor blades to an order, because that additional low-cost item lifted my order into the “free shipping” range.

Like any item that is overpriced, shipping costs are nothing gripe about, just something one has to consider before placing an order.

Ah yes yes. I too add the extra razors to get over the free shipping limit. With all that said and after carefully reading your reply I respectfully resubmit, "West Coast Shaving shipping prices are offensive" Even with the Labor Day discount!

My top three online companies are: The Razor Company, Maggard and Pasteur Pharmacy. But every now and then I have to order from WCS because they are the only one who has what I want at that moment, plus it pains me to say it I love their house brand. The painful part being the shipping cost not the quality of their product! So I guess I have a love hate relationship with them.

I completely understand the “offense” regarding shipping costs, as I too will bristle about higher shipping when ordering online. Looking for alternatives is an option I’ll opt for and if I can’t find one, make a decision as to whether or not I will place an order. I did just that, this past week, finding an item, sized a bit smaller, but still acceptable at a local outlet but a couple of miles from my house. Picked up the item on the way to work and was not out the shipping or the wait.

Let me present a potential reframe of the issue.

WCS, Maggards, TRC, PP, irrespective of the industry, is a business. They have hung a shingle to make money. All costs, packaging the box, posting it, electricity, shipping, margin on products, employees, etc…all subtract from the bottom line.

I KNOW this is well known and no one in this community is blind to the foregoing facts.

Though, I do remind in making the statement, shipping is a cost to the bottom line. In order to survive as a business this cost has to be factored into the equation.

I went to the grocery store last night and two bags of items I purchased cost me $192. Two years ago the same items would have cost me closer to $140 or a bit less.

I was once in the restaurant industry. I’m really put off when a restaurant charges for extra sides. The reality is it costs real money that adds up quickly when owners give away food: regardless of how small a portion in may seem to us. Does the restaurateur raise prices across the board some percent to compensate or simply charge the extra fee per incident?

Shipping costs have risen quite dramatically, like all other costs in the past year alone. Quite frankly, these are not done going up in my estimation and this will contribute to not only rising prices for goods and services, but also increased costs in obtaining those goods and services conveniently (read to one’s doorstep.)

Here’s my point and here’s the potential reframe:

Would it be less odious to have the business factor in shipping for each item and raise the cost(s) of stock accordingly in order to present “free shipping”? Or, keep prices reasonable when still charging for shipping?

It’s possible that business owners are charging a bit more for shipping to cover costs of “handling”: packaging costs, labeling, travel to the shipper if pickup is not feasible (though this is not really an issue these days.)

Bottom line: shipping is a cost that has to be factored into the survival/viability of all online businesses. Whether these are explicit or implicit (folded into the cost of stock) are the choices an owner makes.

Which is the more acceptable?

Well what are their shipping prices? As it stands you simply sound whiny. Maybe provide their quoted shipping prices to you and we can sympathize.
I went to order one small bottle of aftershave for $24 and the shipping was $9! Pasteur sells this brand for $20 but this exact bottle Pasteur does not carry. I have in the past had a list of things to buy and broken up the order between TRC, Pasteur and Maggard or sometimes directly from the maker as most have free shipping after you reach their limit. I love to fight for every penny.

$9 sounds like the actual shipping cost, as if you would walk into a post office and mail it yourself, rather than a discounted or subsidized cost that the seller either eats or is derived from a corporate contract that provides discounted rates due to high volume.

So they didn't offer free shipping on a $24 purchase and you're upset. 9 bucks is pretty standard if you are just ordering one item. You expect them to make zero money off you? Now if you'd have said $15 or $20 for shipping...then yeah holy crap they can get screwed. But a box, packing materials, and carrier charges....9 bucks ain't bad.

I think the small flat rate USPS box is like $10. And even the slowest possible ground shipping with USPS is likely around 5-7 bucks for a bottle of AS.

Just think about it. You ain't going to get something for nothing. SOMEBODY has to pay for shipping.

I think we have to ask ourselves how in today's North America we can still find bargain shipping in the first place. Both CP and USPS are in very bad shape financially. Shipping now is my deciding factor many times in how much I 'need' something.

If a company charges too much then don’t buy from them.

I am not asking for free shipping on a $24 purchase. Check out Maggards shipping rates. Even little mom and pop Moon Soaps charge only $3.99 for shipping. I do lots of ordering online. I stand by my complaint 100% which is: Compared to other similar online shaving soap companies, WCS shipping prices are way to high.

The beauty of the internet, you can compare prices......
Merz Apothecary | Chicago - https://www.merzapothecary.com/ sometimes has good stuff on sale....
Or do a google search......
Some places charge a LOT for shipping....; btw, shipping is now expensive to start....the real cost. Many sellers very clearly say: We are a small shop, we are NOT Amazon, do not expect next day shipping or 2 day delivery....I found that interesting....
Now to add to the complaint: eBay taxes your shipping cost....that is 7-10% that someone is STEALING..... If the seller gets it...well OK.... BUT eBay or the state....NO, it's wrong as the shipping cost includes the state tax already (it's double charging).

Yes, Yes I fully understand shipping costs can be very expensive and all these mom and pop stores need to turn a profit. However I do shop a lot online and for the most part pay little or no shipping. If everyone was charging me a lot for shipping I wouldn't be having this argument.

That is another thing. Most places big or small do ship quickly in my experience. Pasteur, Maggard and TRC usually ship same day no later than next business day.

Be advised - I stopped ordering from West Coast because I frequently received items that were NOT as represented in their photos.
Aerosol spray instead of liquid, different bottles than shown, etc.
Their excuse was that the photo wasn't representative of what they were selling, and that they simply received boxes from their suppliers and sent whatever the supplier had provided.
