Weishi - Day Two

Guys, this is day two of using the Weishi. All I can say is, the cuts continue. I cut my neck three times during the against the grain pass. As I mentioned in another post, it looks like one side of the blade is out a bit further than the other side. Is this common with the Weishi? If so, could this blade problem be causing the cuts, or would I be better to throw in the towel and go back to the Mach 3? I was looking at maybe the Edwin Jagger DE89 as my next razor, but perhaps that isn't a good idea if something touted as the most mild DE like the Weishi is cutting me. Thanks.

You probably need a more aggressive razor. I know it sounds counter-intuitive but I find that my neck gets weepers a lot more easily from a mild razor such as the Weishi than a more aggressive razor such as the Gillette Red-Tip. I would certainly not go back to the Mach 3 for any more time than it takes to obtain a more aggressive razor (easy to do since the Weishi is the mildest razor on the market, try a Gillette NEW or Super Speed). Also, what blade are you using? I get weeperville from a Derby, Racer or Zorrik -- they aren't sharp enough. Try an Astra (either variety will do), they are pretty much universally liked here and aren't that expensive.

Also, it isn't recommended to cut against the grain until you are used to using a DE. The cuts could be partially from too much pressure along with possibly a bad blade. Your uneven blade exposure may also be an issue here.

everything is about practice, there is a learning curve in everything. What is your beard preparation ? Shower or pre-shave cream or both ? Do you put pressure on the razor ? What are you using as a blade ?

Get a Gillette Tech or a Superspeed from the BST. Light years ahead in build quality for very little money.

The blade I'm using actually is an Astra, but as they say, YMMV. I did buy a 40-blade sampler with the Weishi. I've got ten Astras, ten Dorcos, ten Derbys, and ten Precisions. Okay. I'll stick with WTG passes until I am used to the DE. Thanks for the reply, my friend.

My face prep consists only of a shower. Once I'm out of the shower, I prepare my lather, apply it, then shave. I may have applied a bit of pressure. The whole "let the weight of the razor do the job" doesn't seem to work with the Weishi. The blade is an Astra Superior Platinum. I appreciate your reply.

I am surprised that the Astra blade gave you trouble. I think a more aggressive razor would help here but I agree on YMMV. I am not familiar with the Precision brand of blade, I have found the Dorcos were OK and the Derbies were utter crap. I would recommend buying a few more five or ten packs of different brands of blades, since you have some blades to get you through a few weeks Bestshave.net has the best prices on individual packs but the shipment will take a few weeks to arrive from Turkey. Best of luck on your shaving expedition, you will find what is most comfortable for you eventually but it takes time.
