Washer size question

So from reading here I know the size to use is a '0'. My question is that I went to probably the biggest hobby store here in Calgary (PM Hobbycraft)and they had some washers listed as 0-80. Are these the same thing? When I was eyeing them they looked like they would be too big but since I've never done this before I could be wrong. They also carried 2mm washers but I'm pretty sure those are too big. Although they had 1/16"rod, I'm having a tough time finding a place that carries washers small enough.

0-80 is used in HO guage models, so you should be able to get it through a hobby shop. It is also used in electronics, so a fastener supply house should be able to help you as well. Some fastener suppliers only deal with companies, mot the general public, so you may have to call around.

Thanks guys for the responses. I didn't pick them up yesterday as I was unsure if they were what I needed. At least I know now. I'm assuming the first number is the size, hence the '0'. Didn't know what the 80 was for though and I didn't want to buy something that I wouldnt' or couldn't use. Thanks again.

0 is the size, 80 is the amount of threads per inch. A 1/4-20 bolt would be 1/4 diameter, 20 threads per inch. 0-80 is a fine pitch thread, as opposed to a coarse thread, such as a 0-48.

size 0 and 80 threads per inch

oops! Beat me to it. Oh well, at least he will be less likely to forget after reading it twice. :001_smile

i have a thorough understanding of threads and nomenclature... but why include that number on a washer? it should work for anything that's size 0...:confused1
To be technical, you are absolutely correct. It (80) is not needed to be part of the description for a washer. I think the reference might have been to just get the washers that are used for 0-80 screws/bolts to simplify the fellow's search. And if it had been on the packaging, I think it may have been put there to alert the less knowledgeable hobbyists to buy matching numbered items.

Now I think about it, these were on a 4-sided rotating rack, and I think you're probably right with your assessment Bill because all the items on that side had '80' on the packaging. Also, if I remember correctly, the other sides had '90', '75' and something else I can't remember.

Thanks again for all the info everyone.

I'm just guessing here, but with #0 being so small, mebbe a 0-48 won't fit. Usually a fine thread(SAE) washer has a closer tolerance to the pitch size, a coarse thread(USS) is a "sloppier" fit. So, technically it should be a 0 SAE washer.

I'm not quite sure how "guessing" anything will help.

Size 0 washers will work for 1/16th inch rod. Period.

Size 00 washers won't work without reaming them to .062 inch. Size 1 washers won't work by themselves.
