What's new

Want to try straight, but...

I've been wetshaving for 20+ years and DE for close to 6 months now.
I've always had the an urge to try a straight razor, but so far haven't had the courage - until now (I think).

Been net-surfing and found a page with a lot of tempting stuff.
Most veterans here recommends buying a straight from the B/S/T, but can't find any at the moment, so I've been looking at this: http://www.straightrazordesigns.com...id=748&zenid=d61d0f27f17663abefaa507f95b49d86

Is it a good deal, or am I aiming too high with this?

Oh yes, it also seems that most of their offers are "Great deal for the perfect starter set", which pretty much means it doesn't matter what you choose as a beginner - doesn't sound right to me, but then again I know nothing about straight shaving - yet.

I think this might be wiser, it's less than half the price. After you discover you like straights, you can upgrade to something else.

I know the razors from this vendor are shave ready and the strops are good.

Yes that's a good set. I'm sure it falls under the free honing for life offer (on that particular razor) too... I'd upgrade the strop if I were you though from 2" to 3" and I'd personally go for the cotton herringbone weave.

Now having said that, you can get started cheaper if you'd like. Rup razor has a Gold Dollar razor and Filly strop combo for $60. Since this is your first attempt at straight shaving, it may make the most sense for you. Consider: you will nick your first strop and you don't know if you'll care for straights at all. You may want to save as much money as possible starting out. Linky

However, SRD is one of my favored vendors and I highly recommend their service. You won't go wrong with either choice, IMO.

Welcome to straight shaving and best of luck:thumbup1:

yes it's a good deal, i don't think you can find it anywhere in europe that cheap.
since you'll pay $25-$30 for the shipping anyway, and given the big discount on the dovo at the moment I think getting the better dovo set is smarter.
the cheap one will certainly do the job too, but i think most people would look into something better as soon as they can afford it.

It was something down that line that was on my mind.
When I bought my first DE stuff, I went for an adjustable razor (Merkur Futur) and an Edwin Jagger Silvertip brush - and I haven't regretted that for a moment.
My opinion is, if you really mean it then start with, not necessarily top of the line, but some decent equipment, otherwise you won't get the proper result.

If I find that straight shaving isn't for me, I can always try to sell it again. I'm ready to take the loss, knowing it wasn't the equipment. If on the other hand I'll continue, I won't have to upgrade (before the AD sets in that is :biggrin1:)

Well, I have a couple of days to consider what to do - payday is'nt until Tuesday.

Thanks for the feedback Gentlemen.

That tortoise handled Dovo is a very nice razor. I don't think you will be disappointed with it. You may find a better deal from a European vendor, but if you do buy it from SRD, you will know that it has been honed nicely by Lynn Abrams.

Well, call me crazy if you like - others have in the past :001_rolle

I've just ordered the 5/8 tortoise Dovo and by recommendation chosen the 3" strop with herringbone weave.

Now it's just the wait and with a bit of luck, the combined effort of the US and Danish postal services I just might have it before Christmas :001_smile

Thanks for the help Gents.

Nice. With the "Honing for life" offer you dont have to worry about honing now either :)

Unless you develop HAD... one of the worse AD's out there....

That set looks good yes. To start with? Sure the razor will do the work and that's a good strop. However, not knowing if you will like it or not, it might be a lot of money...

This might be better to start, cheaper and will get you there too!

All you really know is a strop (like a Filly) and a shave ready straight. If nothing comes up on BST, try to post a WTB and see what happens. Surely, someone has something somewhere! Good luck!
