The back of it was a real science experiment

The inside wasnt too much better, yum

A lot of cleaning later I have a serviceable razor

Years of that stuff growing on the razor left its mark...You can see it is date coded L2, 1966.

The inside turned out better

This razor has been used a lot, the plating is just starting to wear through on the handle

The plating on the head isnt too bad...was expecting worse

its not the prettiest razor, but it sure is better than it was when I brought it home :001_smile
It definitely is a high mileage razor, but it should be good for a few more...

Thanx for looking
Kevin

Nice save Kevin.
If it is worn & well used someone must have enjoyed shaving with it .... pity they didn't like cleaning it too.
My 1912 GEM was much worse it looked like it had been buried at the bottom of the garden or in a leaky old barn, cleaned up ok but almost no chrome left and a little bent out of shape. I never took any before photos as I expected its next stop to be the bin. It works great ... go figure.
Feels nice to save something.
:biggrin1:

Good job! Scrubbing bubbles?
Yep..first soaked it in hot soapy water, then soaked it in Scubbin Bubbles, scrubbed with a stiff nylon brush, that got rid of most of the chunks.
Soaked it in lemon juice for a half hour, more scrubbing, that took care of the corrosion and rust. Polished with Flitz Polish and a microfiber cloth...

Very pretty Gillette Goodwill

I soaked my razors on baking soda for a few days then washed it off and used plain old dishwashing liquid then a gentle polish with Auto Sol

I did hear of some guy putting them in a tumbler the sort of thing you use for rifle and pistol cases, it came out nice.

Nice saves, amigo!

About half of the 40+ razors I have were in similar condition(s). It always amazes me how nice even the crummiest razor will clean up to.

Very nice clean-up on the Super Speed! The major culprit looks to have been soap scum along with copper "patina" from the brass giving the nice green color! A few leftover whiskers added to the presentation!

Brass will turn green when exposed to moisture over a period of time. Normally, the razor's plating keeps the brass from contacting water, but wear to the plating over time will expose the brass (brassing) and allow the dreaded green gunk to form. In this case, it is probably a microscopic break in the plating around the relief slot cutout on the base plate that allowed the corrosion to form.

Keeping the razor clean and dry will help prevent the problem from coming back . . . but neglect it and it will turn green again over time.
