Walking Horse Vs American Mountain

Gents these days I'm looking at various strop and I fear its the beginning of another AD. As an experiment I have ordered one from one of the leather shoe makers in my town to make a strop for me. After seing my WD PM's strop he agreed to do one form me. But he was not sure whether he can obtain good quality leather from tanneries .
So while waiting for that I've been looking at the two mentioned in the topic. WCS is having both but only 2" strops mountain mikes strops. At the same time I really interested about WH Horse butt 2".

(I'm only looking at entry level)

Those who have used them, can you please give a comparison of the above.
(At the moment I'm leaning towards the horse butt strop from WH)

Are there any other places which carries this lower end strops ?
(Now dont mention about TM and scruple works and drive me crazy as I have them in my wish list. )

Thanks in advance

Fine time for proverbs, colloquial sayings and lyrics from favorite songs...............................

There is an old saying, "In for a penny..in for a pound". I have semi-translated it into a more modern-Americanized version-"In for a buck..in for a bundle". Another way to put it.."Go big or go home".

Your strops listed are $50, $61, $66; I am sure they are fine strops.

Tony Miller strops can be had for $25, $77, $82, $89, $94..depending on size and handle vs D-Ring.

Point being..why wish?? "Life's to long to worry...life's too short to wait." (Courtesy Todd Snider)

:cursing: I was trying to get either of the above (Probably WH ) and to get the TM and try for a scruple workes later some time.

Man you are spoiling my fun !!

Seriously TM does not offer horse hide strops in his site . Srupleworke's horse hide strops are pretty expensive.

So I thought of going with WH horse butt and now it seems at WCS 2" strops are out of stock.

I don't know whats happening to me ??

I fear I may have set you on on the Scrubleworks path. I have a 2-1/2"-wide Walkin' Horse horse butt that just gets better with continued use. That said, the small 2" wide Scrupleworks horsehide strop I picked up for travel duty in Europe was very slick out of the box. For no frills, the WH, although it has the cursed D-rings, and there is no way to customize things in that regard, apart from slicing off the end yourself (I grip the end of the leather, ignoring the D-ring). For genuine artisan quality and suppleness, Scrupleworks without hesitation, and you can drop a line to Torolf to let him know what you prefer (barber's end in my case).

Bottom line is: what are you using at this point, and what style and draw do you prefer? That's all that matters. Save your peanuts as needed and buy what you want when the time comes, and when you've done nicking your previous strops. WH horsebutt has a relatively fast draw, as altered by neatsfoot oil application and use, whereas the Scrupleworks horsehide was leaner, but immediately serviceable.

As far as the strops you linked are concerned, I personally would stay away from the WCS latigo and WH English bridle, since they promise to have a medium to heavy draw and I prefer strops with a lighter draw. But that is a matter of personal preference. Beyond this, I don't like rings and handles. A barber's end is where it's at for me, since I like to leave things a little bit slack. My take on things though.

You are right . Presently I'm having 2 WD PM strops. I think I should go directly to TM first and later to a scruple works without spending money unnecessarily.

Thanks Gentleman.

I have had a considerable bout of strop AD. I have a Walkin Horse split side and their cordovan shell as well. A TM steer hide and a Scrupleworks horween. I have two Mountain Mike's latigo strops as well. I still use them all. The one thing I am stuck on is genuine linen prep surface on all of them. I pulled the canvas off the Mountain Mike's and replaced it with linen. All the strops are definitely different, but it comes down to a YMMV kind of thing. What ever you are in the mood for. The one I use the most often? Probably the Walkin Horse split side, but if my TM were three inches longer it would get the call more often.

I had a chance to own a Walkin Horse 2.5" Cordovan strop a few years ago. I spoke with Walkin Horse directly and found their customer service stellar.

Scrupleworks also makes nice strops. I owned a 3' cowhide strop that had serious draw. Once again, the customer service was above and beyond.
