Vulfix #41

Thanks to John (greendyk) I acquired today a brush that I had wondered about since joining B&B in late 2006. This was one of the iconic LARGE brushes that got air play during the early shaving forum days. Back then, well before Rooney Heritage and Simpson/Vulfix, before Plisson became a thing of obsession, the Vulfix BIG brushes were in vogue. When I saw John offer this monster on the BST for a measly $75.00, I just had to jump on it and see what it was all about.

Well, the handle is enormous! The loft is like that of my dearly departed Kent BK12 (Stauff....do you still use it in Belgium waters?) but not quite as dense. I believe the #41 soaked up close to a quart of water when soaked in my basin a short time ago. It easily produced a ton of lather with of all things, Mitchell's Wool Fat Soap. ( Wasn't this supposed to be a CREAM brush?)

Sure it is SUPER floppy...Moppy... but it really was fun coating my face in less than 3 swipes. My Simpson Chubby Two looks like Mini Me next to it.

I really enjoyed my time travel back to 2005 with the Vulfix #41. This brush will not be for everyone....MOST members would find it wayyyyyyyyyy too big...and wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too floppy. I found it ....nostalgic!

I know stiff brushes are all the rage these days, and I like them myself, but there will always be a place on my shelf for the big Vulfix (both the 40 and 41). It may be floppy but you'll be hard pressed to find a better brush to whip your creams in to an amazing lather.

Before I started posting here I read alot of the forums everyday. I imagined what a good brush would be like compared to my Burma shave boar. It seemed like if you did not use a 30mm+ knot, then you were not a man. That Vulfix was like the gold standard of shave brushes.

I still have not gotten around to taking pics of this monster brush but I have been reaching for it lately over both my Simpson CH2 (shedder) and a #12 HMW Plisson in genuine horn. I'm happy with the way it works with soaps although it is considered by most to be a "cream brush" for bowl lathering. I used it with TABAC today and have used it with excellent results with Mitchell's Wool Fat soap as well. I acquired it from John (greendyk) on the BST at a bargain price but I believe it would be a great value at the MSRP via an online vendor as well if a member wanted a truly luxury BIG brush. The handle is faux ivory and slightly bigger than say a Simpson Chubby 3 which it resembles handlewise.

I've come to really like larger brushes. Picked up a Vulfix 40 from the forum awhile ago and a Plission HMW 20 a few months ago. The Vulfix is just a bit to soft for me, compared to the Plisson, but it is really a wonderful feeling to just bury your face in lather and soft bristles. Kind of like a facial massage  Never thought I would prefer a brush this size but now after using them regularly, just can't go back to the small ones!

I believe that IS a #41 but Joel could confirm it. It blooms less than the BK12 which I previously owned. Inspired, I will use my #41 tomorrow!

hmmm... Mike, what was it about the BK12 that led you to let it go? (I just received notice from across the sea that my new BK12 just "dispatched!")

I feel I must inform you that it was your unending praise (and obvious love) for the V41 that drove me to the 12.

So what's the story on the Kent?

Mutually agreed to cancel purchase
Bought #41 from another member
Missed purchasing a BK12 on BST

Finished buying any brushes with the exception of a HUGE Plisson in the future.

You will like the BK12.

The above describes my 400 plus BST involvements... Maniacal... And I RARELY miss.... Thus, .... "The Shark"

Bought this brush, used it twice. Instantly love it. The knot I can confirm is 26mm and not 30 as is widely reported.

Unlike Mike, I don't get the feeling this is a huge (to the point of putting a lot of guys off) or floppy brush; it lathers hard soaps as well as my Rooney 1/2, and weirdly, doesn't look or feel all that much bigger (the Rooney has a 24mm knot).

Did one test lathering with a cream (RSC) and it didn't work well at all - brush hold a LOT of water and I just ended up with a frothy mass.

I think this brush may have cured my SDAB.

edit, about the huge and floppy thing; I really like brushes that splay somewhat when face lathering; I feel the best, most well hydrated lather is created in the knot itself, rather than at the tips, and brushes that splay allow this lather to be applied to the face more easily. If you enjot superdense, scrubby brushes, Mike has a good point.

re-edit, the other brushes I have been using are a 24mm Rooney and a 25mm Omega 31064, hence I wasn't overwhelmed my the size of this brush. Perhaps if you have been using a Rooney 1/1 it would be a bit of a shock :closedeye

Adam,
So now you have experienced the true magic of the #41. Using this brush with Tabac, Trumper Rose Shaving Soap, or Mitchell's Wool Fat has been a delight for me as well. I think it truly takes to soap well. The final squeeze of lather from it's well hydrated breech is amazing! Glad you found the brush to your liking..... I have purchased a few brushes since first owning the Vulfix #41 but I will say it would be the final brush in my den if push comes to shove.

Mike, I've used this brush twice with Culmak SS and once with MWF (these are two of the hardest milled soaps that are available right now, I think) - every time I've gotten effortless and luxurious lather.

Starting to think that maybe the hype surrounding the ultra dense, firm brushes isn't something I buy into. :001_unsur Going to rotate this brush with my Rooney 1/2 for a while and see what happens.

Guys, if you're looking for a large, luxurious brush, this one really is a bargain imo. Its the definition of luxury, function and its also surprisingly versatile; a couple of test lathers with a cream also produce great lather quicky (the first time I tried I made a watery mess - the amount of water these btushes hold may take a bit of getting used to for chaps used to the smaller brushes).

I'm glad there's a bit of an appreciation for the larger softer brush, all this soap scraping with little wire brushes is so undignified.
