What's new

vintage Yardley experts - a question:

This unused bowl of Yardley's came to me in a box of sewing notions (really) - I've not seen this label before - I've seen a couple versions of the green and black; I've seen the white and red "Y" - but not this. The bowl is also turned differently; the pressing on the top of the soap is different from what I believe are newer versions. I'll appreciate any guesses, information, etc....

This may not be much help, but what is the address on the one pictured above? It looks like 8 New Bond Street, but I can't tell if there is another number after the 8. Is it the same as the address on the label on the one in this thread? I can't quite discern the numbers, but it appears the street is "Old Bond Street." If they are indeed different addresses, which appears to be the case, perhaps old records would indicate when the shop was at different addresses and that could give some information. Also, the label in this thread has a copyright date of 1970. It's not much of a start, but I figured I'd mention it to contribute to the discussion.

Jon, you come up with some of the most interesting stuff. It's like detective work unravelling the mystery.
The clue for me is the address of 8 New Bond Street on the soap bowl. That was the original address of Yardley's shop. They were located there starting from 1801. The head office and main shop were moved to 33 Old Bond Street in 1931.
As to whether they maintained the shop at 8 New Bond Street for a couple of years, I don't know. However, the tenants of 8 New Bond Street from 1935 - 2007 were the famous jewellers Bentley & Skinner.

I have (had) more money than scents, my mama would say - but I'm quickly exchanging one for the other.

Peter, that is a great bit of detecting - an address of 8 New Bond Street would place this bowl in the early '30s, in other words... or earlier. How cool!

Thank you for this.

Brian - it seems the address is the key....

The prince of wales' warrant is on the soap which from memory is something like 1921-1939? Either way I call dibs on it if you sell it:thumbup1:

Very nice find!

Yes, Jon sleuths out bowl after bowl... on the bright side, he must eventually sell his "modern" soap to pay for his vintage habit. :biggrin1:

...this is some soap!

It's gonna break my heart to use it... maybe I'll put it two pucks back in the Yardley queue.

(At this rate, my kids will be selling it at the Bythbook Memorial Lawn Sale - after I depart, that is. Look for it for $1.)

I think you're right, Jim - that is a the Warrant - 1920's, eh? - yikes! This one is in the Fougere Royale class for scarcity, isn't it?

Good idea, Christian - watch BST for a "Contemporary Soap Sale" - coming soon!

Make sure contemporary is relative to that Yardley, so anything later than 1933 goes up for sale.

Dibs on the 50's Yardley!

hahahahhaha... well done!

However, my working definition of "contemporary" is "still in production."
